When to change Ball joints , Tie rod ends, Sway bar links on a Toyota Corolla CE 2006?

Vehicle is just about to hit 50k on the Mileage, and the Tires recently been replaced|||There is no scheduled maintenance for those things. You replace them as needed. Your owners manual will tell you when to check them.

How do you change a front axle, tie rod on a Ford Aspire?

Take it to a shop that can also do a an alignment and have the rest of the suspension evaluated.|||I dont know how to change the front axle tie rod.

But I posted some links to information below.

I dont endorse or take any responsibility for what is posted. If you dont install it correctly, it would be very dangerous.

I did find one person who posted how to change the front brakes and tie-rods on the Aspire. You might start with that.

I also saw many online companies who can sell you the parts that you will need. Most tools (tie-rod puller etc)can be borrowed from AutoZone ( deposite refunded when you return them).

6: With those removed, you should be able to pull the axle out, but you don%26#039;t have to do that yet. The next thing you do is seperate the hub from the balljoint. Using the 14mm wrench and socket loosen and remove the lower bolt. After that, hammer in the tie-rod end seperator and start to pry the hub off the balljoint. Using the cheater pipe might help do this.

7: with the hub seperated, now you can remove the tie-rod end. Use your flat head screwdriver to pry out the cotter-pin and then use your 17mm socket to loosen and remove the nut holding it to the hub. Using the sledge hammer, whack the tie rod end out of the hub.

You might also repost listing the year your vehicle was manufactured, listed on the front door. 1994, 95, 96,97

1. Right cantilever arm in car is what? 2. Change tie rods in both sides?

Mechanic suggested replacing right cantilever arm in 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer car? What exactly is it? Is it the same as tie rod? Is it necessary to change tie rod on both the sides of car when only right inner tie rod seems to be the problem?

Thank you for the answers.|||Sounds like a shade tree trying to sound educated. Hes referring to the tie rod ends. Not necessary to change both.

How do i change a tie rod bushing on a 1999 chrysler 300m?

HI

It not really a bushing its a tie rod end. see link

http://www.partsamerica.com/productdetai鈥?/a>

It not really a job for the novas. it takes a pickle fork (that%26#039;s what the tool is called) to pop the tie rod off the wheel then you have to un screw it from the drag link, paying attention to how far it is from the sleeve it screws into so you can get it close to the right distance. Screw the new one in reattach it to the wheel. toque it down and pin it then go the the front end shop for an alignment. As the tie rod is what makes the tires Straight from left to right side of the car and adjust the toe in/out of the front end.

good luck

Is it possible for an inexperienced person changing tires to put them on wrong and damage the tie rod ends?

IT IS POSSIBLE TO MOUNT A TIRE WRONG, WHAT YOU DAMAGE DURING THE INSTALL CAN VARY, TIE ROD ENDS WOULD MOST LIKELY BE THE LAST ITEM DAMAGED, PUTTING A STRAIN ON THE VEHICLE WITH AN IMPROPERLY MOUNTED TIRE COULD MOST OFTEN WARP YOUR ROTORS AND DAMAGE YOUR BREAKING SYSTEM. YOU CAN ALSO PUT YOUR SELF AT RISK OF LOOSING THE WHEEL DURING MOVEMENT. ALSO THINGS EFFECTED WOULD BE, WHEEL BEARINGS, TIRE WEAR, CV SHAFTS AND EVEN BACK INTO TRANSMISSION BEARINGS. YOU HAVE TO INSTALL THE TIRE CORRECTLY WITH PROPER TORQUE AND TECHNIQUE, IF YOU DON%26#039;T FEEL YOU HAVE DONE IT CORRECTLY CALL A MOBIL REPAIR MAN OR EVEN A LOCAL TOW COMPANY AND HAVE THE VEHICLE TOWED TO YOUR PREFERRED MECHANIC.|||I wouldn%26#039;t know how that could ever happen.|||no, he would have to wreck in to the lift|||yes if you tighten too tight|||That is really really hard to do. It shouldn%26#039;t ever be a problem|||Possible?? I suppose.

If the wheels had reverse offset, It COULD rub on the knuckle.

But, that would be a new one for me.|||If the tie rod is bent it could have been done with a shop jack if it was jacked up manually. I can think of no other way that anyone changing tires could unintentionally harm a tie rod end. The tie rod is a very tough joint and normally takes years of driving abuse to weaken it. If it fell apart it%26#039;s because it needed replaced.|||In theory yes, however, in theory, it is also possible to set the car on fire just by changing a tire.

If you have a spare tire on your car right now, you need to look no further to what your problems are (I鈥檓 assuming that you car is shaking at high speeds and handling poorly)

It鈥檚 far more likely that the tire is just not tightened all the way, or unbalanced, you would have to either drop the car off the lift or run into something fairly hard to damage the tie rods.|||Unlikely to the point of science fiction. You can beat on a tie rod with a hammer and not damage it.|||no.

How do u change a tie rod on 03 buick rendezvous?

inner or outter?|||If your asking how to change a componet like this tells me that you want to learn but are probably not experienced enough. I would find a local mechanic that will let you watch.

My tire sounds like its going to fall off since brake pads changed tie rod fixed still noise

Could be a warped disk. If you just got your brakes done, then that might be it.|||Change it soon.|||sounds like a piece of crap. get a new car or lease one.... if u can%26#039;t then have a professional fix it you bum.|||Wheel bearing going bad?|||Check the bearings and lug nuts.

How do I change tie rods on a 2001 Saturn SL1?

I don%26#039;t know what tools are needed for this job. It looks like I need to remove the tires and brakes to get to it. Is this correct? Any help greatly appreciated!|||you will need a jack, some kind of tool to take off the lug nuts, such as a 4-way, the tool that comes with your car, an impact wrench with the correct size socket., a pickle fork(this is a tool with a longish handle and it splits at the end to go around the tie rod end or ball joint), and whatever wrench fits the nut on the bottom of the tie rod end.you will also need a hammer.

These are the necessary tools for an outer end, which is the most common problem. if you are replacing the entire tie rod, and not just the end, follow the tie rod up to the rack and pinion.there will be a nut there.this nut unscrews to take the tie rod off.

If it is just an outer end, jack up the vehicle and remove the tire on the correct side of the vehicle. the tie rod end on the vehicle screws onto the tie rod and is secured in place by a nut that is tightened against it. loosen this nut by turning it clockwise, this way the nut moves away from the end. now, take off the nut on the bottom of the tie rod end.there may be a cotter key here.remove that first.once this nut is completely removed, get the pickle fork.try to jam it between the tie rod end and the place it is mounted.once in place, hit the end of the pickle fork handle with a hammer.keep doing this until the end pops out of the hole.now unscrew the end from the tie rod. Leave the nut on the tie rod, as it will keep the alignment close.screw the new end on and put the shaft facing down into the hole.put on and tighten that nut and cotter pin, and tighten the nut on the tie rod against the new end.

You will need to take your car in for an alignment afterwards unless you dont mind putting new tires on it way prematurely|||Tie rods are really simple in most cars. FIRST buy a chilton manual so the steps to do it are very simple and laid out for you. You%26#039;ll need a good neumatic jack. God to Oreilys or auto zone to rent the tie rod puller.

It%26#039;s really as simple as jacking up the car, pulling off the old tie rod and puttin on a new one. Make sure you count your treads for your new tie rod or your steering will be jacked...|||Honestly , if you don%26#039;t know how to do it. Take it to a mechanic. You will have alot of problems and most likely not do the job correct.|||You%26#039;ll want a professional to do this job, and after they finish the tie rods have your front end aligned. All this takes special tools and experience.|||http://www.extremehowto.com/xh/article.a鈥?/a>

How to change an inner tie rod end on a 1997 Dodege Stratus?

you need to remove the outer tie rod first by remove the nut that holds it to the spindle. use a pickle fork or a hammer to get the outer tie rod out of its socket then unscrew it from the inner tie rod. then you need an inner tie rod tool that is a pipe that slips over the rod and is turned by a ratchet you can also use a crows foot and a long extension if you have enough room. when you done you ll need to get it aligned|||Pop the outer tie rod end loose and remove it from the steering rack. Then you can get either a special (very deep socket) or use a 1 3/16%26#039;%26#039; offset wrench to unscrew the inner tie rod from the steering rack. Then reverse the order and have the alignment checked as your toe-in will be off.

How do i take the inner tie rod on a sentra 03 ?

i worked mechanic for 6 years since i was 18 now i%26#039;am 24 ,but how do i change those freaking japenese inner tie rod on this 03 Nissan Sentra GXE , it have that little swivel but how does it come off , does it have a bolt behind it or a pin or it just pop out or have to be press in .|||You need a balljoint puller.|||If what your talking about is the jam washer, that is hammered out of the way and then the inner tie-rod tool will work.|||Lol ball joint puller for an inner tie rod rotflmao. This is what you do, jack the vehicle up, remove tire, take wrench and just bust the lock nut loose between the inner and outer tie rods, remove the cotter pin in the outer tie rod, remove the nut, smack hub/spindle with hammer, remove outer tie rod completely, remove lock nut off inner tie rod, remove clamps that hold bellows boot on, remove bellows boot, bend the tab as the first poster stated, then use inner tie rod tool to remove tie rod from rack and pinion. Thread new inner tie rod on , tighten with tool, bend lock tab/washer down, reverse procedure on the rest counting threads. When done, head to an alignment shop for a four wheel alignment.

What is easy way to change inner tie rod end in 98 toyota camry?

Well.....the easy way is breakin it off.....other than that there is only one way...the right one.|||What do you mean %26quot;easy way%26quot;? There is only one way. It unscrews.|||Some parts stores have a front end kit that they rent out. You buy the kit, use it, and then bring it back and they give you all the money back. Get the one that screws down not the forks. Works much better.|||There is a special tool to remove inner tie rods from your steering gear(the rack%26amp;pinion %26quot;rack%26quot; as most people mistakenly refer to it). This tool is not very expensive at your local discount auto parts store.

I changed the tie rod ending of my 91 ford explorer?

because i was having a problem with it so i thought i was fine, but when i inspected the car when it moved i noticed the the tires go like this /-\ seriously they tilt outwards, no i want to know if i may have did something wrong because the tie rod looks fine, i believe it may be the lower ball joint because i tested it and it gave me problems, but can it also be the wheel bearings?|||did you count the turn to take it out ?

Always count the turn put back in same turn not perfect but drivable

till you get wheel alignment

if only tie rod change toe in or toe out problem if was ok be fore

wheel bearing can be adjusted easy don%26#039;t over tight them

if you have ball joint problem then change as pair top and bottom

on each side also look a radius arm bushing right hand side the

bushing are very close to catalytic converter then to go first

check fore play up and side to side

have truck alignment after that check or shop can do it for u|||I guessing the tires upright are slanting in, if so the upper control arm or upper and or lower ball joints are bad, if they are poiting towards each other then you got the toe off on the alignment when you installed the tie rod end. Take it straight to an alignment shop and get a TOTAL wheel alignment.

Tie rod changed but now have play in steering! Any Ideas?

Ive had my tie rod changed after hitting a curb bent it. Got the VW dealer to do it as I didnt want to take any risks with the steering but still problems.

Now ive got the car back there seems to be too much play in the steering wheel, theyve had it back and say nothing wrong with it.

When driving on the motorway you are constantly adjusting the steering as its tight going right but can move 2cm left until it effects the steering - you can feel it bite if that makes sense.

No noises or vibrations and still drives straight if you take your hands off.

Anybody have any ideas?|||If they say they fixed and you say they didn%26#039;t.Talk to the manager at the shop you took it too. tell them it was not like this before the wreck. If they don%26#039;t.

How do I change the inner tie rod ends on my 2002 chevrolet impala?]?

i own a repair shop, and unless you have the proper tools this can be a challenging job to do on this car,you might want to take it,and have it done,if you decide you want to do it on your own,,you,ll need a repair manual to describe the procedure for this, because its sort of tricky getting them to pop loose without damaging anything,,good luck,i hope this help,s|||Advance Auto Parts has a step-by-step for outer tie rod ends, if you%26#039;d like to check that out for reference.

http://www.advanceautoparts.com/english/鈥?/a>|||you need a special tool and you will need a front end alignment, buy the parts yourself and have a shop do it, you wont save alot by doing it yourself . a local parts store can help you get started and your local library can also help

What happen if I dont change my tie rod on a 4 wheeel drive vechiles?

Same as on a 2 wheel drive , they get loose to the point that they fall off and you lose your ability to steer the vehicle|||Your tires will go out of alignment and you will have terrible shaking any time you go over 20 MPH. It will also destroy your tires, rotors, breaks, etc.|||You will stand at the curb DUMBFOUNDED when it lets go and renders you parked.|||Excessive tire wear, poor steering control, possible wobble over pot holes and, oh yeah, if it fails and comes apart, the tire will quickly move to a perpendicular position relative to the to the vehicle - and, with the steering wheel no longer connected to the tire (as a lawyer might say), this may seriously compromise your ability to control the vehicle.

How do I get the inner tie rod off on 1992 civic?

I went to change the inner tie rods on my 1992 civic. In the repair manual, it only shows how to get off the outer tie rod. The inner tie rod is connected to the steering rack and is covered by a boot, and the inner tie rod will not slide out of the boot because it is too big.

What do I do to get it off?

Is it a bad idea to snip the boot a little to open the boot off?|||There should be a clamp that holds the boot on, that you should release, along with a ventilation tube if so equipped. Here%26#039;s a link that covers this a little bit, although not as good as it could be.

http://www.autozone.com/az/cds/en_us/090鈥?/a>|||I would recommend taking off the clamp that holds the boot on, not cutting it. If you cut it you set yourself up to be replacing an entire steering rack later on. You can use a chain wrench or a pair of channel locks to get it off once you have the boot off. It%26#039;s not that difficult, and with the boot intact it gives the indication that the inner tie rod is not corroded in place.|||DO NOT CUT THE BOOT. Your gonna need a inner tie rod remover. Some of them are on car, or will require you to remove the rack. The boot protects the tie rod from dirt/water/...... So do not cut that. I would call around to auto parts stores to see if they rent them. that would be the cheapest way.|||you can snip that boot if you are wiling to replace it, but you can in some situations remove the clamp and slide that boot out of the way. |||the inner tie rod takes a special tool to remove it and put it back on.

I need to change the left inner tie rod on a 99 Ford Contour. How do I get to the end by the rack?

The instructions I have say to remove the sub frame. This sounds rather difficult to do out in the middle of my back yard. Is there another way to get the job done?|||You can replace it without removing sub frame. You need to have inner tie rod end tool (rent or buy, check with your local tool supplier)

Remove tire, remove tie rod end (count number of turn when remove it so same number of turn will be used to install it), disconnect breather pipe, remove boot, remove travel restrictor (SVT vehicle only) at inner end of inner tie rod.

Use inner tie rod tool remover to remove the inner rod.|||THIS IS A COMPLICATED JOB AND IF YOU HAVE NEVER DONE IT THEN I WOULD SUGGEST THAT YOU HAVE IT DONE FOR YOU BECAUSE OF SAFETY ISSUES.|||I%26#039;m not sure, but I have a 98 Ford Contour.....and I just wanted to let you know that I am sorry that you have to drive that god awful piece of machinery....I am so sorry.|||I would take it to the cheapest mechanic and have them do it. It sound like its going to be a pain in the but to do. Good luck

Can you just change an outer tie rod on a 94 cutlass supreme?

i was in an accident and it is clear that my outer tie rod is broken, one of my neighbors said you have to also get a new rack and pinion in order to fix the problem because the tie rods and and rack %26amp; pinion are all one piece. is this true? i need some advice asap please and thank you|||The outer is most definatley replaceable, before you remove it however count the turns as you remove it and repeat the counts upon reinstall, that will get you close enough to drive it to an alignment shop.|||Yes you can replace the outer tie rod end, you can also replace the inner tie rod as well. The other people that have answered your question are right on the counting of how many turns it takes to take off the outer tie rod end, I cant stress it enough count the turns not the threads. If it is required to replace the inner tie rod be prepared to to rent a inner tie rod removal tool from your local parts store to help in your removal of your inner tie rod and there will be a rental fee for that tool. There will be no need to count the turns on the inner tie rod just your outer tie rod. If you want you can take you vehicle to any Firestone store and ask for a free courtesy check and if you ask you can get a free brake inspection as well which should include a complete vehicle inspection. Firestone also has a lifetime alignment option as well as a regular alignment there is a price difference but if your planning on keeping your vehicle for a long time the lifetime alignment is the way to go. The lifetime alignment only covers hooking up the alignment heads and aligning your vehicle not parts that require replacement, but in the long run it does save you money. Good luck and Firestone has over 2,200 stores nation wide that will honor that lifetime alignment and any other work that gets done to your vehicle.|||The outer tie rod end is a separate piece so the alignment can be adjusted by screwing it in and out. Your neighbor probably got taken by a less than scrupulous mechanic.|||No you can replace the outer tie rod end if that is all that is bad. Count the threads that you have before you screw the tie rod end out that way you can get it back close enough to not wear out the tires before you can get a alignment.|||some u can some u cant just get in there %26amp; look|||If you have a air jackhammer you can take it apart|||your neighbor is wrong. The outer and inner tie rods can be changed separately from the rack and pinion on almost any car. As long as you didn%26#039;t damage the rack and pinion, any mechanic can replace a tie rod end for you. you should probably also get an alignment too.

How to change a outer and inter tie rod?

Hello,

I have a 1996 Dodge Caravan. the outer tie rod on the passenger side broke off, i would like to know how to fix it and is it a easy fix. Also since the outer tie rod broke does that mean i have to replace the inter tie rod? To me it looks pretty simple but that just me! are there any special tools i need?|||To replace the outer there is really no problems however if you need to replace the inner you have to have a special tool(inner tie rod tool) although as long as the inner is not damaged and does not have slack you shouldn%26#039;t have to replace it...Don%26#039;t forget to get an alignment after wards though.|||Like Sara just said, there is a special tool you need to be able to remove it with. How to change inner tie rod end on a 1997 nissan maxima?

Most likely the steering rack boots are split open axles boots torn and other parts have worn out too. You first have the entire front end checked for worn cracked bushings wear to the struts and lower control arms (transverse links) rear bushings all looked at. Changing just one worn part and spending money to realign the car then finding another worn part and realigning again? If you start to get dirty you might as well see it thru to the end and put the suspension back to like new condition. Then spend your $69 to $89 dollars for an alignment once. Sorry that is how Nissan Technicians make there money. 12 year old car suspension parts wear away and slack in any part will prevent the technician from being able to align it properly.|||either one just type into search box

Change the break pad that still has 10% left in it? Change tie rod too?

2002 lancer with 110, 000 miles. The current break pad has about 10% left and occasionally does a mild grinding noise when breaking at 45 mi/hr above. It it necessary to change the break pads now or it is okay to wait for another few thousand miles

The front tire is a little shaky when car is up on the hydraulic shift (I don%26#039;t feel so when driving), and the mechanic said that inner tie rod needs to be changed. Is it necessary too? (I drive very carefully within speed limits)|||It%26#039;s probably best to do it all now rather than later. With the brake pads, once you wear through the remaining material you run the risk of doing more extensive damage. Once it gets to be metal on metal your rotors are probably done for and the heat created can cause damage to some of the other parts. If your tie rods are bad then you could be causing additional wear to your tires and if it starts to create a vibration it can wear other parts in the front end causing a bigger repair bill later.|||Your current break pads make a mild grinding noise. Right, the proper thing to do is wait, until the noise gets louder and then you can always turn your radio up so you don%26#039;t hear it.

As for the tie rod ends, no you don%26#039;t have to do that now but if they break when you are driving the 60mph speed limit and your front wheels point out to the opposite sides, you%26#039;ll wish you paid more attention to the signs.|||Both items effect your ability to control the vehicle, and should be changed.

Personally I like to change the brake pads at or before 20%, but that%26#039;s just

I have been told that my tie rod ends are badand I have a significant amount of play in my drivers tire, Iam noticing more and more each day that my car is shaking worse and not as stable on the road it seems to float at times? they told me it was the tie rods and that they needed to be replaced ? is this true or does the bushings just need to be replaced? how hard is this and it is something a novice could do? they want over 400 to do both sides for new tie rods! any help would be greatly appreciated|||Bushings are easy.. you can buy the kit from Chrysler p/n 5072586AA for the price of $22.35 +tax. As long as you have some mechanical ability, you should be fine.|||They can be stubborn to get off, you%26#039;ll need a ball joint fork to get them off. Also you%26#039;ll need to get the front end aligned after you are finished. Good luck.|||Just the Ball Joint? If the vehicle is a frt. wheel drive, it%26#039;s probably on the ends of a rack %26amp; pinion assy. FWD, also make use of a ball-joint control arm assy. If you prolong replacement of the tie-rods, you%26#039;ll waste the other components. The worse thing you can do is continue to drive it in this condition. Ever seen a car with the wheel folded under it, or kicked out into a fender? When it happens, it will scarce the be-jesus out of the driver..........ESPECIALLY at hiway speeds.|||You can replace the tie rod ends yourself then bring it to a shop to get it aligned.

How do a change the tie rod on a 1998 Chrysler Sebring Convertible?

Tie rod systems consist of both a inner and outter tie rod and if you%26#039;re talking about one of the outter tie rods then it%26#039;s not too hard.Myself if the other sides outter tie rod end hasn%26#039;t been replaced would for sure replace not just one but both of them.In fact on a vehicle that age I%26#039;d probabbly advice you to also change the inner tie rods too or atleast check them and replace the inner tie rod bushings for sure.

Basically it be best and easiar to just unbolt and pop out the outter tie rod ends and then remove the bolts holding the inner tie rods on , then slide out the whole assemblies. Then place the assembly in a vise and mark the spots where the two outter and inner tie rods bolts meet up, plus then you must unscrew the outter tie rod end from the inner and by twisting the outter tie rod end off.

I really suggest that if you look around you could probably find whole new inner tie rod ends fairly cheap and instead of spending 40 or 50 on lifetime warrantied inner tie rod bushings , you buy replacement arms but again it%26#039;s up to you.

If using a new bushing kit you might find out that the inner tie rod ends may have already had the bushings replaced and if so they will pop out of the end very simply or you%26#039;ll have to lock the inner tie rod into a vise and knock out the bushings. But the lifetime inner bushings are so easy to install that it will seem like a too easy process to snap them in and then attach the new outter tie rod end and reinstall into vehicle.

If you just change the one outter tie rod end that will require a 4 wheel alignment and I believe it will cause some of the steering system to have some play in them, plus it will cause more stress or pressure on the old tie rods that it will loosen up the system. But you may have very solid inner tie rods and bushings and only need to replace the outter tie rods. I%26#039;d for sure have the system checked over by a shop that offers free front end checks and have them show you if any play in the inner rods and if any play in the other outter rod end.

To me to make sure the system isn%26#039;t loose I%26#039;d be changing the two outter tie rod ends and at least the bushings on the inners so then I%26#039;d know the system should be more solid and ready for wheel alignment , plus I%26#039;d have tire pressure checked, tires rotated and have them balanced before getting the wheel alignement done. This way the wheels should roll more evenly and smoothly plus the steering should be a lot more accurate and tight.

Just be sure that you don%26#039;t have any grease points that need grease or faulty balls joints if your going to replace a outter tie rod or any tie rods it%26#039;s best to have a couple of front end shops give a free check as you watch them and then know uofront that no other parts have play or are faulty. It%26#039;s very normal for some ball joints etc to have a tiny bit of play but if upper ball joints are tight+ solid and lower loose a bit it affect the over all steering and wheel alignement slightly too.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way you may need to remove wheels or remove the outter tie rod on the vehicle , it%26#039;s best to have a service manual or get it up on stands and take a look to see what would be easiar.I suspect the rods are probably quite rusty and that%26#039;s the main reason why I suggested removing the rods intacked and using a vise to help you remove outter tie rod but take note if really rusty you might need the vise and a blow torche to even get them apart.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way some auto parts outlets offer a free service that gives instructions and even print outs of the proceedure.Really I%26#039;am suggesting this tie rod work be checked and maybe done due to the age of your vehicle and it probably needs it too.|||I would suggest you have a pro do it, as the toe-in should be checked after installation.

How do you change a tie rod end?

how can i change a tie rod on my truck?|||Loosen the clamp or jam nut that keeps it from turning. Remove cotter pin if equipped. Remove nut from stud. Use pickle fork to disconnect from steering knuckle or center link as applicable. Mark threads before turning out from sleeve or off of inner tie rod, Install new tie rod same distance into sleeve, or onto inner tie rod as old one. Retighten all fasteners after installing stud into steering knuckle or center link as applicable. Have alignment checked.

Unless your truck has rack and pinion, and you%26#039;re talking about the inner tie rod.|||Wow, I didn%26#039;t even realize that had finally posted. I gave up after trying about 6 times, and sent the e-mail. What kind of truck is it anyway?

|||1. jack up and secure the front of the truck

2. remove the front tire

3. remove the castle nut on the %26quot;knuckle%26quot; of the joint.

4. Get a separator tool to separate the the joint from the steering knuckle(what the brakes and tire is mounted to).

5. Loosen the one clamping bolt on the threaded portion of the tie-rod on end.

6.Turn, usually counterclockwise, the tierod out of the or the adjusting sleeve. COUNT the number of turns and remember.

7. re-install the same way, make sure the castle nut is tight and use a new split pin. If you tighten the nut and the hole and the castles do not line up, tighten the nut until they do.

If you do not have a torque wrench, get one. get a manual too.

I recently changed both tie-rod ends on my 2002 Seabring, and now when I turn there is a grinding noise?

Is it just that now I need to get the wheels aligned?|||Wheel aligned is the first place to start, also your CV Joint could be going bad as well, or your brake shoes/pads are dragging.

PLEASE HELP I am changing the outer tie rod on my car and can't get the jam nut loose!`?

1996 Chrysler sebring convertible|||Did you remove the cotter pin?

Sometimes these nuts are extremely rusted may need to try some WD-40 or even heat to loosen this nut.

Also try to keep the tie rod the same length when you install it

either count the turns and or measure accurately

It is still best to get alignment to set the toe in on the car|||Two pipe wrenches and a LOT of brute force. Hold the outer tie rod with the pipe wrench and lock it against the frame or lower control arm. Use the other pipe wrench on the nut. Turn it nut counter clockwise just enough to loosen the nut. Then count the turns out and put the new one one with the same amount of turns. Then lock the nut back again.|||Have you looked for a carter key that holds the nut from spinning. If this is not the problem, then rust could be. Try spraying it with liquid wrench or a penetrating oil and let it sit overnight.|||Use a pipe wrench or vice grip

remember count the threads out.

and then replace and thread the new piece in the same amount.

So you wont need a alignment|||are you turning it the right way? try using vise grips on the tie rod and loosen the nut.

How do i change a inner tie rod end on a 1999 chevy prizm?

I want to change my own inner tie rod end before i have an alignment done and was told it can be hard if you dont have the right tools, anyone know about a 1999 chevy prizm...can that be done in a drive way with basic tools?|||Mark the tie rod thats on the car with paint where it goes into the rack and pinion. Take off the old one, measure or count how many threads are sticking out of the rack then set the new one up the same by thread count. You should be pretty close.|||it fits up inside the rack so you need a special tool to turn it out and put the new 1 back in.

Do i need to replace the tie rod ends when changing the ball joints on my 1999 ford exxplorer?

no jeff ! as long as the tie rods are still good then all you have to do is separate it from the steering arm. just change the ball joints and hook the tie rods back up.|||Only if they a worn also|||Tie-Rod Ends do not need to be replaced unless they are bent, damaged, or if the boot is torn. If everything appears okay, then it probably is of no concern. Clean it off, double check for tears or damage, and if it has a service port for a grease gun, inject some lithium grease into it until the boot swells slightly.|||only if they are bent or damaged

How To Tell when Outer Tie Rod Goes Bad?

Well, I know when a inner tie rod goes bad theirs play in the wheel left and right, well the outer tie rods how do they go bad?

I took mine out my 94 Mustang 5.0 and the inner had play but the outer is always the same.

How do i know when to change outer tie rods?

And should i put performance ones on since my car is lowered?|||test the same for both but if your replacing the inner do the outer one as well they aren%26#039;t that expensive iff you lower it just normal ones will be ok and while your at it check and replace the ball joints the lower ones wear faster than the upper but why not replace them for peace of mind|||jack car up hold wheel left to right shake it

can feel it move alot can look under and behind and see it move

not hard to replace at home but have to have a alignment to set it right

can also check ball joint and bushing by shaking wheel top to bottom

type into search box

how to replace tie rod

how to check tie rod|||The same thing happens...you have play in the wheel. As mentioned above, with the front jacked up, turn each wheel from left to right. If the tie rod is loose/has play, the wheel will move with little only a little push from you.|||The way to test outer tie rods will be the same. Check for left-right movement of the wheel when the vehicle is in the air. Since you are lowering the car you will want extended ball joints to account for the change in suspension angles due to the new/lowered nature of the suspension. This will reduce unwanted wear and play in the stretching of a factory ball-joint on a lowered suspension.

Good luck, hope this helps.

What is the average cost of getting a tie-rod changed?

My friend hit a curb in this icy weather, with her front wheel. It bent the tie-rod and is not drivable. The car is a ford focus.|||cal autozone and buy it yourself remove one big nut and rent a crows foot to remove it and loosen two locking nuts with count treads or warp tape around end and take a big pair of pliars unscrew tie rod screw back in really not that hard then drive ti to have front end alignment or just cal lthree tire stores and ask how much they charge id say about 100 bucks

How do I change a tie rod end?

I loosened the bolt but the tie rod won%26#039;t come out of the steering knuckle. I tried hitting it but it is stuck tight. |||I agree you need the fork tool but once you get it loose, count the turns as you unscrew it and put the new one in the same number of turns. This will get your alignment close.|||Is there a cotter pin in there?|||you need something called a %26quot;pickle fork%26quot; or in the real terms a %26quot;tie rod/ball joint seperator%26quot; it%26#039;s basically a fork shaped deal that you wedge in there and beat with a hammer.

http://www.tooltown.ca/12-Ball-Joint-Sep鈥?/a>|||If you to your local auto parts store they will have a %26quot;fork%26quot; looking tool to pry out the ball end. They are relatively inexpensive. |||have a heavy hammer 5lbs. or bigger rap as hard as u can never used a tie rod (pickle fork ever for this)|||Chev M is correct. Pickle fork is a waste of time. Hit the knuckle over and over again till the tie rod end pops loose. Careful not to hit other things, you%26#039;ll have to swing pretty hard! It sounds barbaric, but that%26#039;s how techs working on the line do it.|||I have a fork, found it pretty useless.

Find a lever that you can fit berween the steering arm and the tie rod end, after loosening the nut a couple of turns. Apply force to the lever, and if the taper does not already let go, then crack the eye of the steering arm sharply with a (not too big) hammer while still applying force with the lever. It should crack out no problem. Tyre levers, pinch bars, wrecking bars, big old screwdrivers are good levers.

NEVER try to drive the taper out by hammering on the end of the thread or nut.

Do try to take a measurement of the distance the joint screws into the tie rod, and set the new joint as close as possible to this measurement when fitting it.

I am changing the tie rod ends and ball joints... is there another part/parts that i might as well change?

if you have not started this. caution.. measure the distance of the old piece.. the alignment can be ruined.. the toe in and out. you could ruin a set of tires just being a sixteenth off.. after you change. make shure you have greese fittings on the replacement pieces.. and after you are done have an alignment done.. also i would buy a grease gun. hand operated and five pounds of good grease.. if this had been lubricated regularly you would not have to replace ok gilermo|||what kind of car? if i were you i would get it aligned.|||Any other steering joints (ball joint at steering box, idler arm if your vehicle has one.

Check your brakes. How many miles? Wheel bearings maybe...|||if you r changing both upper and lower balljoints and inner and outter tie rods ends u pretty much got it.

you may wanna check the pitman arm and idler arm for play. they are attached to the steering.

if there is no play them you are good to go. but i do recommend getting a wheel alignment. since it is outta wack.

if you don%26#039;t you will wear your tires out very quickly.|||Definetly get an alignment. If it is a truck/suv, check for wheel/hub bearings for any play at all. If its a passenger car, check your brake pads for wear and your shocks for any sign of being damp.|||thats about all as far as parts concerned. now on the front wheel drive, you will have to rent a special tool, if your changing the inner tie rods, and you will need a pickle fork to seperate the ball joint and tie rod, after everything is installed, you need a grease gun to grease them.

When it is time to change a tie rod?

What are some signs it is time to change a tie rod?|||looseness in the steering, a popping sound when turning or hitting bumps, and visual movement in the actual tie rod.|||If a tie rod is gone you need to replace the motor.|||Have the cars alignment checked and he will tell you if they are worn, If he don%26#039;t tell you ask him to check them for you , hope this helps.|||A tie rod is part of the suspension in the front. Excessive tire ware or steering play can be a good indicator, but most likely you will know when they cannot align your car or the alignment will not hold it settings.|||yeah bdgizzy you sure know what your talking about .. It is hard to notice when to change the tie rod a little bit of steering play is common or sometimes pulling to a side , but those could be alignment issues also . Basically inspect it for damage , even if the rubber cover is cracked , replace them .Usually 75-100k miles is normal .|||I wish I knew what bdgizzy was talking about. But take your car to a tech to tell if it bad. The way to tell if it is bad, is to wiggle tire (off the ground) if the tie rod moves before the rest of steering it is bad. If you do replace it get an alignment after-wards.|||Tie Rods give a long advance warning before they need replacement. Somethings to note are:-

1. A judder from the front suspension when you hit a bump or rough patch on the road..

2. A slight %26#039;clicking%26#039; sound when you gently turn the steering either ways with the engine stopped.

3. Hold the front wheel horizontally and move your hands back and forth as if trying to shake the wheel. Any undue movement would indicate weak tie rod ends.

4. Jack up you car and physically check with a strong screw driver or a crow bar for any play in the tie rods.

Tie rods are esential for the safety of you car, so perhaps you may want to have these checked out by a professional suspension mechanic.

Good luck.

How hard is it to change a tie-rod end at home on a rear wheel drive family sedan?

It is on a 1996 Holden VS Commodore. I have my own tools but nothing specific to tie rod ends. I know that once it is changed it will need a wheel alignment immediately; but I just want to know how difficult is it to change the ends at home?|||It isn%26#039;t actually that difficult but by the time you add your time, the tool rental and having an alignment done, you may was well have it done at a shop.|||fairly easy, rent a pickle fork to make the job easier.

Hell I wouldnt know what they would call a pickle fork down under though...

http://www.thepartsbin.com/cartools/spec鈥?/a>|||peice of cake. 2 jack stands, large hammer and a pair of pliers for the cotter pin, and just lossen the 3/4 inch nut enough that you still have it on the treads and then hit that sucker at the nut and the thing should pop lose its about a 1 1/2 hour job|||not hard at all, you just need a 2lbs hammer and a some wrenches, rember to hit the knucle and not the rod to loosen it, then have car realigned.|||most of the time its not hard and you can knock them out with a hammer.

But sometimes they are rusted in and you need a special ball joint puller

When changing a rack pinion what else should i replaced beside the rack pinion? Like tie rod yes or no?

When changing a rack pinion what else should i replaced beside the rack pinion? Like tie rod yes or no? Or the power steering hose ?|||Just check the bushings for wear by twisting the tie rod. If they%26#039;re loose, change them. Check hose for cracks before spending the additional money.|||If you are getting a used rack-n-pinion check the cv axles and ask how many miles where on car prior to removal of rack-n- pinion.|||If you purchase a %26quot;Long Rack%26quot; the inner tie rod ends are supplied with it. Check the outers for looseness and damaged grease boots before installing them on the replacement rack. If the mounting bushings don%26#039;t come with the replacement rack you should replace them too.

Replace any damaged or leaking hoses when replacing the rack also.

What steps are involved in changing an outer tie rod end on a Volvo 850?

It%26#039;s a 96 automatic non-turbo sedan. I know I will need an alignment (most likely the toe), but I was wondering if it was a job that can be done at home, or should I leave it to the pros on Monday? I already have the part, and nothing to do tomorrow!|||You will need to take off the tire. Once you take off the tire you will need to get under the car to loosen a 21mm (as far as i remember) nut which keeps the outer tie rod attached to the inner tie rod.

Once you do that you will need to use a 13mm (as far as i remember) wrench and make sure the outer tie rod end is not seized/rusted to the inner tie rod. You will move the inner tie rod around to see if both are moving freely.

If both are moving freely you can now use a 18mm (wrench/impact or whatever you have available) to loosen the tie rod end form your steering knuckle.

Once out have done all of these you can spin the tie rod end off while you count how many turns it took to get it off. To put the new one on as close as possible you spin it back on as many turns as it took to take the old one off.

It will get you close to where the old one was originally. You will still need to get an alignment but it will be close.

Hopefully that helps.|||buy a manual at the parts store, they can be done in less then an hour on most cars, u need a pickle fork jack and wrenches, lug wrench, it should be easy|||are u sure that the old one is bad ?

you gonna have jack up the car and remove the tire

once you have done that then your half way done.

but just a quick recap, before you jack up the car make sure you break the lugs loose so then it would be faster to take the lugs off once the tire is off the ground.

make sure you count the number of revolutions its gonna take to remove the bad one.

its best to let the pros do it

it is very easy if you know what to do. but if your not sure u gonna kill the whole day and not get the job done.|||If you know what you are doing, you can do it yourself. You have the shop manual and the tools you need eh?

Alignment even isn%26#039;t that challenging to do yourself, the main stuff is to know what toe setting you want, and measure and adjust until you get it, and also make sure that the steering wheel is dead center... it is actually easier getting the toe set correct than to get the steering wheel centered. You can measure toe with a measuring tape, measure gap between front wheels at fronts of wheels and at backs of wheels and then take the difference.

When changing tie rods on a ford escort should I change both inner and outer?

I have a 1995 ford escort 1.9 liter recently I was in for an oil change and it was recommended that I change my tie rods. Are they talking about the outer tie rods or should I change both inner and outer and how much time and/or tools would I need to them myself.|||take it to somebody who does alignments and have them check it, not a chain store like midas or jiffy lube. if you do it yourself chances are the steering wheel will be way crooked and the tires will wear fast because of the adjustment. most likely just the outers will need to be done, i dont change inners i replace the rack%26amp;pinion assy. and thats expensive. but the alignment has to be done right away after the tie rod ends are replaced. also the lower ball joints on those cars go bad often, have them checked as well.|||changing the outers is easy and if your measure carefully and count the threads as you remove the old one you will be close. inners are tougher and require special tool

When changing tie rod ends, is it necessary to change both when only one is bad?

no|||I%26#039;ve never worked in a garage that changed both if only one was bad. I wouldn%26#039;t think to recommend it unless they need to be lubricated and it is obvious the other one was never lubed, thus causing the failure.

Just change one and get it aligned.|||you don,t need to change both sides as long as the other 1 is still good. i had 1 on the drivers side went bad once and i did,nt change both sides. just change the bad 1 will be ok.|||i would recommend you change both so you get the same feel for both sides.. also worth your money when you do the wheel alignment..|||I would only change the one that is defective. It is unnecessary to replace them both.|||They recommend you replace both at the same time. Most shops won%26#039;t do just one, they insist on doing both or none.|||you can change just the bad one|||No.It is not necessary.|||I did mine last week just the one side it was the inner rod.

The others were good.|||only need one replace only one|||i would if you already have all the tools out and the car is jacked up/ on a lift.|||No you don%26#039;t have to change both.|||you dont have to but it would be best if you did :-) you choose xD

Can i change the outer tie rod end on my 1987 mustang lx (2.3l) without changing the inner tie rod?

the passenger side out tie rod broke off and i have new ones for both side, but do i have to change the inner ones and if so how to get them out?????|||You will not %26quot;need%26quot; to, but I would advise it. The ones that broke probably have the same miles and time as the ones that are not.

Take the rubber boot back and you will see how the old ones come off. Also a good way to see how parts come off, is to get the new ones first. Most of the time it is self-explanatory.|||As long as your going to the work to change it change all of them. They don%26#039;t cost that much. Remember to take it in for alignment when your done.
