Need some advice -- what could be causing a squeak/noise in the front of my car?

97 Ford Escort

Replaced the brake pads last year

Replaced front tie rod ends last Oct.

I had a rock in my router a few weeks back and it was making a high pitched squeal. The rock fell out and it has been fine up until now. I'm hearing a noise in the front of my car. It's hard to explain. It happens occassionally while I%26quot;m driving and occassionally when I brake. However its not all the time. It almost sounds like something is loose. I'm taking it in for an oil change and tire roation tonight. I'm just wondering if anyone has any ideas of what it could be so I know what to expect. The maintanence on this car has been minimal as it was in mint condition when I bought so I'm baffled as to what it could be. Anyone any ideas?
Need some advice -- what could be causing a squeak/noise in the front of my car?
check the brakes, the rotors, and the calipers. also have the mechanic see if the plate behind the rotors are touching.
Need some advice -- what could be causing a squeak/noise in the front of my car?
have the wheel bearings and brakes checked out
It's a 97.... sometime cars develop noise with age. Many times its just tight fitting parts beginning to wear and just aren't tight anymore. Let me give ya this though. If you are sure it is from that wheel, we'll start there. Brakes are OK you did those recently. if it happens when you apply your brakes it could be normal brake squeal. all cars do it from time to time. Some more than others. If that same sound continues after you release the brake pedal, then you may have a caliper sticking, causing the pad to remain touching the rotor....thus resulting in break noise. WHEW!! There's one down.

Now if there is something loose up there it has been loose since the brake job, causing your car to do a Harley Davidson impression, and loose a part. Unlikely though not impossible. Jack up the wheel, pull tire, check for movement in loose parts or objects rubbing the rotor.

Next, we have wheel bearings. Once you have exhausted my other advice, have a mechanic repack your bearings. Some tire dealers are able to do this for you at a reasonable cost.

If after all this it still squeaks, then you were NOT sure it was coming from that wheel, for there is nothing else there to make noise. GOOD LUCK!

How do i change the differential in my 1990 Corolla?

1990 Corolla.

Was drained when I filled it up with 80W90 gear oil.

Auto transmission.

US calif. Model. 4AFE engine.

I think something gave way inside(probably a tooth on one of the gears). It starts rolling, I hear a loud crack, and the left wheel shakes.

It started doing it when it turned only, now it does it going straight too.

CV joints are new and OK.

Tie rods Ok(new)

Steering perfect.

Brakes perfect( new caliper) New pads.

Auto transmission: new filter and fluid. Seems to work smooth( Then again, I have never seen what a broken down auto transmission feels like; anyone knows the symptoms of a faulty transission?)

My diagnosis is that my problem is the differantial, but i do not even know if i can just replace the differential alone(it is front wheel drive) or if it is part of the auto transmission.

ps. I have both Chiltons AND Haynes repair manuals, but neither talk .... about the differential. They go off track talking about the all wheel drive wagon transfer case.
How do i change the differential in my 1990 Corolla?
I'm a little skeptical, %26quot;a loud crack%26quot; doesn't quite do it for me. I would inspect the suspension and CV joints again.

However, the car is a front wheel drive so the differential should allow slippage as the wheels turn. Fast repetitive slippage and seizing could possibly cause the wheel to shake. 80W90 does sound a little light, I would have guessed 85 or even 90 weight oil do to the direct connection to the transmission. The differential should be bolted on to the bellhousing, so you should be able to remove it without the transmission but I wouldn't know for sure without looking at it. I suggest removing the differential cover and checking the gear teeth for wear or any metal loose pieces of metal (there should be a magnet at the bottom that collects these). A bad transmission wouldn't cause the symptoms your describing. Normally when an automatic transmission fails it tends to burn fluid, slip, shift really rough, sick in one gear, not go forward or not go into reverse, hell I've even seen cause the engine to die out. You might be able to find one in the junkyard.

Anyway, good luck with that, I hope you figure it out and get it resolved. I'm curious to know what it is.

Anyone In The Milwaukee WI area CAR TROUBLE.. Please Help..?

Is there anyone out there that could please help me change my inner tie rod end?? I am stuck 300 miles from home and don't have much money. I am stranded. I bought the part needed but can't change it myself.......
Anyone In The Milwaukee WI area CAR TROUBLE.. Please Help..?
i can take a look at it, i am close to milwaukee. if its changed you will need an alignment afterward other wise it will pull to the left or right a bit.

let me know

what kind of car by the way?

depending where it is stuck i could take it to the dealer i work at and have someone change it there any maybe do an alignmelt also if you want.

Do I need to replace a loose center Link for a 73 Super Beetle?

I slid into a curb during a snow storm and now, when I brake at a high speed (30 MPH+), I get a shuddering in the front end. I went to have my oil changed, and asked the mechanic to look at it. He told me the center link was loose (the tie rods loked fine, btw). Does it need to be replaced, or can one tighten it?
Do I need to replace a loose center Link for a 73 Super Beetle?
A loose center link would be due to a bad tie rod end. The center link is what the tie rod ends are attached to. If it is loose, the tie rods would slide in and out.

You probably bent a rim.

99 Pontiac Grand Am SE 2.4L.. Can bad sway bar links cause sloppy handling? My car wanders all over the road.?

I have had the struts, mounts, springs, hub assembly and inner and outer tie rod ends changed on both sides of my car and have had several alignments, but the handling is still very sloppy. As soon as I let go of the steering wheel the car pulls very hard to the right and even wanders over the road on smooth dry pavement. The mechanic said the control arms, ball joints and all of their components are fine. I wonder if the sway bar links are bad. Any ideas?
99 Pontiac Grand Am SE 2.4L.. Can bad sway bar links cause sloppy handling? My car wanders all over the road.?
Also, check your tire pressure. Keep in mind too that the road itself can play a role.
99 Pontiac Grand Am SE 2.4L.. Can bad sway bar links cause sloppy handling? My car wanders all over the road.?
yea it could be the sway bars and also could be bad tires. Pontiac's usually dint handle good anyway tho. Hope i helped.
It's the steering itself. Nothing else.
Sure you must select you
Hi get the bushings for the sway bar. Then get the wheels aliened and ask for two more degrees toe in. That should do it.
Sounds like a bent frame..

Did you hit the curb or some other thing..??
paul is right, but i wouldnt go 2 degrees. it depends on the width of the tire, narrow tires, less toe in, wider tires, more toe in.thatll do wonders except for tire wear.
have the idler arm checked as this will allow front end wander,as well as the toe out settings.Toe in is measured in inches, not degrees.

Engine running rough in a Dodge Stratus 2002?

My car seems to be running differently. I just had the oil changed and all my fluids checked, everything was fine. I just recently had the brake pads replaced and my tie rod replaced. My engine seems to be reving more and when I go to break it has this odd %26quot;hiccup%26quot; where it almost seems like it isn't going to stop. It's not the breaks, it's the engine and I'm not sure what the problem could be and I need some ideas of what I could do or if I do need to take it in and what I would say to the mechinc about what the problem could be.
Engine running rough in a Dodge Stratus 2002?
next fuel fillup put some fuel injector cleaner in the tank i have owned a few dodges in my life all had fuel injector problems try a tune up too can't hurt to try

    good luck

are you sure you got the correct weight of the oil? some oils are more viscous than others..
need more info. is it a coupe or sedan? 4 cylinder or 6?
it sounds like your engine is misfiring; check the spark plugs and the air filter
Might be time for a tune up.
It sounds like the shop left a vacuum line loose. Possibly to the brake booster. A vacuum leak willmake your car run badly including revving up and not wanting to stop. Take it back to the shop that worked on it and talk to the service or store manager and explain to him that this problem started after your last visit. If he doesn't fix it for free take it somewhere else, explain to them what happened at the other shop This will give them an idea what to look for. If they do find something underhanded going on, then you just found yourself a new shop who is honest and sympathetic to you. And the other shop can be held liable for trying to rip you off.

    ASE technician
sounds like a vacuum leak, from what you describe. listen for a hissing sound. most likely a broken or disconnected rubber hose.

Apparently I need my car aligned. Would that cause a shaking/rattling noise in the front when I drive?

I went to get my front brakes changed recently and was told I needed an alignment badly and a new axle and tie rods on the front. Which of these things would cause the front of my car to shake when I'm driving fast on the freeway? And if I can't afford to do them all at once, which would be best to do first? Thanks!
Apparently I need my car aligned. Would that cause a shaking/rattling noise in the front when I drive?
Tire balance! The shaking is what killed your tie rods and ball joints in the first place.

If the shaking only happens during braking, it's your rotors.

Whatever it is get it fixed all at once, beg borrow steal whatever it takes. You will probably pay less in labor that way, and your saftey should be first priority.
Apparently I need my car aligned. Would that cause a shaking/rattling noise in the front when I drive?
probably all of it if u trust the place.

these problems can easily damage your tires n u don want to get new tires, do u
what year is your car, mileage and condition of it also, depending on the problem it may be time to just get a new car, i mean why keeping putting money into somethinig that may break down again in a fe months, my mom kept doing that with her car, i said mom u could be using that money as a down paymenht for something better. moral of this story is that she took my advice and now has a 07 chevy cobalt, she has had it for almost a year and has saved herself time and trouble.

if your car is fairly new, then maybe u want to invest in it, its all up to you!

Driving problems with 2003 chevy impala.?

When I drive my impala at 60mph or higher it starts shaking. a lot of mechanics have told me it needs a balance. but, I don't want to do that because I need new tires anyways. otherwise I would do it. when I first got the car i took it to midas and they told me that the rear axle tie rods were bent which you could plainly see that they were bent. I thought they were just lying and wanted to screw me over with something else. well, time elapsed I took it to a friend of a friends and he told me that its the tie rods and that they need to be changed ASAP that its a life threatening thing. now he gave me an estimate and hes charging me 155 per tie rod to change the inner and outer tie rod ends so that's 310 for the both sides. plus 82.50 for the labor. so it comes out to about 400 plus tax.

Now I wanted to know is this something I could do by myself and save myself A LOT of money on or should I spend the money and save time?

    Thank you

    Bradley

P.S. I bought this car with rebuilt title and it was crashed from the rear.
Driving problems with 2003 chevy impala.?
dont be a tight wad with your car or your life--or someone elses either . you could have major problem if the tie rod was to break at say 60mph or if you lose a tire because they bald too... fix it on your own and save the labor cost. then head down for the alignment right away. they dont tell you things --and then show you if they're not serious. you could always leave it till you feel like fixing it and take the chane of something breaking while you're driving and hurting someone else.... that will be cheap... dont be a fool-- fix it.
Driving problems with 2003 chevy impala.?
Fix the car your life is worth more than $400 plus tax. You are getting a deal on the labor. You may get a little cheaper if you buy used tie rods but that's not a bad price.
You will most likely not be able to re-align the suspension without the tools to do it, at least not with any real accuracy. Suspension adjustments and replacements, especially if the vehicle has been wrecked, are best left to a mechanic with the right alignment equipment. Some people try to do it with a tape measure, but the results are never as accurate, and will typically need to be redone.

Another option would be to change the actual rods yourself, just make everything look straight as possible, it may want to pull or dogtrack, then take it to a shop to do the actual tweaking and alignment, that may save you some money.
wel when a mechanic tells you what the problem is then why not listen.. bad tires yes tire balance yes and yes you could have change thew tie rods your self two bolts to loosen and one nut to remove and with a hammer knock it out and twist it loose count how many turns it take to remove and screw back in that many turns will get you close and able to drive it to be align and tie rods you can call any parts store and not way they that high might be like 100 buck for both of them just call autozone and ask how much tie rods are... lay down on ground and look how they come off not much to them might need a crows foot or a tie rod fork to get the one end loose not hard job but still have to have a alignment done after job price is high when the job is easy.. tie rod will unscrew with a pair of pliars will have like two locking nuts you loosen or remove then you drive out the other end and unscrew it not hard you can rent the tool autozone also just ask for the tool to remove tie rod make a call easy here a few hows to's they all about the same

My Car Shakes Wildly On The Freeway! Why?

When I drive on the freeway and hit over 65Mph my car starts to vibrate heavily. I already tried to align and balance the tires. I even paid a fortune to change the axle rod which a mechanic claimed to be the source of the problem. However, the issue persists. Now the mechanic guy told me to try changing the engine mount and the tie rod. But Im not going to throw my money away again if it wont fix the problem.

So can anyone suggest a solution? Should I trust the mechanic guy or what?

    Thanks a lot,
My Car Shakes Wildly On The Freeway! Why?
My very first thought was a bad tire.

Jack up the car and slowly rotate the tire. Check for any out of round or side to side motion.

I had tires balanced three times. Still had vibration. Jacked up the car and discovered the tires were out of round by .016%26quot;. Purchased two new tires and I said good bye to vibration problems. I told the techs to check for out of round and side to side. This was not done. Had this problem on my current car. I watched them balance the tire. I could see tread moving side to side. Tech did not look at tire, just looked at the balancer's readout. I pointed out the tire was moving side to side and why didn't they visually inspect the tire as I had asked. Remounted the tire and rebalanced. Problem fixed.

Question, is the steering wheel moving rapidly back and forth when you drive? If so, then you have a bad tire. Or a bent rim.

I would look at the tires first. Do your own inspection first.

    Hope this helps.

    Good Luck
My Car Shakes Wildly On The Freeway! Why?
it may be drastic like that, but it sounds like you may just have a busted belt in a tire.... you can really only detect at high speed and they probably haven't thought lightly enough to rule it... just get close to your tires and check the sidewall for a slight bulge outward, in a perfect circle around a tire, about midway of the side... i hope its this easy
It may be your bushings. Suggest to your mechanic to take a look at them before you spend more money. That's my suggestion, good luck.
if it is consistently over 65 mph it can be either a tire balance issue or a broken belt in the tire(s). If it only starts to vibrate after you hit 65 mph and then you say oh shoot, im speeding and then you tap the brakes and thenit starts vibrating, its warped front rotors. An axle rod (im assuming half shaft) would have made heavy vibes at all speeds

and to Mr. Ross, it still wouldve made a vibration at all speeds (bushings??? how about wheel bearings??? bushings on a car causing vibes.....)
jay, your mechanic is the one from the battery commercial keep hitting it itll fit.id check my wheels and tires.harmonics are funny and while a bent wheel would do it at low speeds, would tend to lessen at speed, but an out of round tire wont, itll just bounce wildly, not saying thats your problem, but take it out on the highway and have a buddy drive next to you passenger side and drivers side and see if something is obviously bouncing.is it rear wheel drive?standard trans?(even auto) it may be a pinion bearing, bent driveline or slip yoke or bad bushing in the tail shaft.front wheel drive, id look at steering as well as all axle bearings. also simple check is rubb your hand along tire tread, looking for bulging spots.it could even be the strut towers flexing or the rubbers gone from the struts, somwhere the prob is small, but vibrations will make your car a pile of junk. those vibes are transfered harmonically to your whole power train.
There are issues that are specific to certain vehicles! Please - put the vehicle information in. For example, Jeeps can develop a %26quot;death wobble%26quot; from a worn steering dampener. Others can develop an oblong in the tie rod ends, leading to a loose wheel and a speed-specific vibration.

Suggestions on a phantom model are phantom suggestions!
That's what I think as well, your tires. BUT if you want to make sure, you could try the TIE ROD troubleshooting tip found on the link to further isolate the problem. I wish you good luck!
the rim could possibly be bent. but it definately sounds like a tire problem

  • 2000 Taurus Clunking Noise?

I have a 2000 taurus flex fuel, Has, 88,000 miles on it. there is a clunking noise coming from the front drivers side when i hit bumps, I looked under the car noticed the ball joint was leaking grease so today i ripped it apart pressed a new joint in and replaced the outer tie rod....No change. same sound...Also when I have people in my back seat usually 3 people there is a rattling sound in the rear like a loud vibrating....
    2000 Taurus Clunking Noise?
Sway bar links are a problem on these. Hard to tell if they are bad , but they make a rattle type noise.

They are right and left and also have an up and down to them.

Also gotta watch that the frme mount for the sway bar hasn't rusted off / loose. If it is bad you have to replace the complete cradle.
    2000 Taurus Clunking Noise?
the clunking noise could be a loose or bad strut and the vibrating in the rear could be a bad hub bearing.
    bad motor mount?
all the above are in the right state of mind, usually a strut, tie rod, control arm busing, upper or lower ball joint worn out... easy fix though but get it fixed as it only wears out other things etc...

    Wierd noises in car......?

i recently took my car in to have the inner tie rods changed and they told me that my steering rack needed replaced. that it had a pinhole in it and a very slight leak.

for a while i noticed a humming when i started the car and after the gas pedal was pressed it went away. the noise was only for a fraction of a second. lately it has gotten worse. it hums for couple of seconds at a time and when i turn wheel to right it hums loudly.

i checked my power steering fluid and it was extremely low. i haven't checked it in so long before that. i added the fluid and the humming has stopped and my car drives amazingly better (go figure!!)

i now have a ticking noise coming from the engine bay....... my questions is: could i have possibly messed up my power steering pump or something (powers steering pump pulley bearings??) from not having fluid in it for a long period of time?? could that be what the ticking is?? it doesn't sound like any engine tick i have ever heard.
    Wierd noises in car......?
First find out where the fluid is going, leaking hose,is the pump leaking,is it leaking from the rack and go frm there
    Wierd noises in car......?
rack and pinion? has a rubber boots on it that fills with transmission fluid and you got a leak, the lower the fluild the grater the noise or hum while turning for it only works when turning.

the ticking noise might be low oil or a chattery lifter .
ive never in my life heard a power steering pump tick so thats elimenated maybe its a lifter with a little built up gunk also can be bad gas try to fuel up some where else if this dont help go through and change your plugs make sure they are gapped to specs.also may be time for an oil change.also is this noise constant or only when u start it? how many miles as long as its not a loud knocking noise your fine.also diffrent oil wait helps in the cold winter what year car and model, size engine.

What would cause the shaking and shimmying in the front end of my truck?

On my 77 Ford F-150 4x4 i am havin a shaking problem, sometimes when i start to drive, my front end starts to shimme, but other times, it wont do anything until i get to about 50-55 mph.. then it starts shaking really bad and i have to slow down to about 10mph to get it to stop. I had this problem last summer too, so i changed my front springs, and shocks all the way around, including the steering stabalizer shock, i also replaced the rocker arm bushings, this fixed it until recently. it started up again, im not sure if it is alignment or something to do with tie rods or what... but it doesnt do it all the time which has me confused, sometimes it only shimmies a little, but most of the time it shakes really bad... any suggestions? anything helps

    Thanx
What would cause the shaking and shimmying in the front end of my truck?
Worn out tie rod ends or a worn out ball joint can cause those symptoms.

Best way to check. Jack up the front of one side of the truck. Grab the tire on both sides (left and right), and wiggle. The tire should not have any play in it from the suspension side. If there is a looseness or you feel something clicking then you have to replace the loose part. Usually you can visually sight it if you can feel it.
What would cause the shaking and shimmying in the front end of my truck?
I would suspect worn tie rod ends. Check them on both ends; if there is any play on either the steering knuckle end or center link end, that tie rod end needs to be replaced.

    Could also be out-of-balance wheels...
since you have alrready spent all tha tmoney, have it checked by a professional
IT REALLY SOUNDS LIKE YOUR STEERING STABILIZER SHOCK HAS GONE OUT AGAIN, BUT THE TIE RODS COULD ALSO BE A CONCERN, I WOULD UNBOLT ONE END OF THE STEERING SHOCK AND PUSH IN AND OUT ON IT TO SEE WHAT KIND OF RESISTANCE YOU GET, GOOD LUCK.
    check your u-joints

I was told that my tie rods are really worn, is this true if my car shows no evidence of bad steering?

I took my 1994 Volvo wagon in for an oil change and they looked the car over and reported that my right front tie rods are very worn, however, I just recently returned from a road trip and the steering seemed to be great. I could let go of the wheel and it would not veer at all. Bumpy roads were fine. And my tires have no sign of particularly abnormal tire wear. Should I be concerned and get it fixed asap, or get a second opinion?
I was told that my tie rods are really worn, is this true if my car shows no evidence of bad steering?
the biggest key here is that your tires seem to wearing properly, typically the first sign of steering component problems...

    get a second opinion...
I was told that my tie rods are really worn, is this true if my car shows no evidence of bad steering?
dale's on the money, honey. have a professional look at %26quot;that%26quot; tie end and show you where it is bad. if your tire has the kind of wear with chapping it is a sign to check for a problem. and there may be none.then i suggest rotate the tires.
Definately get a second opinion. But do not give the second mechanic any suggestions. A lot of mechanics work for a commission and will say yes they are bad just to make a buck. If the second says its bad, ask them to show you. You will have no problem seeing the movement if its badly worn.
A second opinion is in order - but if the boots over the tie rod connections to the racks are torn they should be replaced soon to prevent wear.

I ignored torn boots (at $25 each, just for the parts!) on my 1985 765T. One of the tie rods eventually started wearing, and it was very obvious. Light or hard braking was okay, but moderate braking made the front end shake like a wet dog. I was amazed to find the wear on the tie rod was only a little less than a millimeter!

Not a fun job at all, especially if it is both. I believe that you would need a special socket to unscrew the inner tie rods. I'd say, phone around and get some estimates, cause that is not a fun job at all.

Can both my front inner and outter tie rods be broke if I have been driving all this time?

I have read and heard that if your tie rods are broken then you can't steer your car. Well a place I took my car 2 years ago to get an oil change said that both the front and back inner and outter rods were broke and needed to be replaced and it would be $800

now today my husband finally asked another repair man who said it would be $600

Is it possible to drive for years on broken tie rods in the front and back????

or are they just trying to rob me?
Can both my front inner and outter tie rods be broke if I have been driving all this time?
broke and bad are two different things.

broke would mean the actual tie rod either snapped (pretty damn hard to do) or that the balljoint in the end of the rod physically came out of the socket. in either case, you would completely lose use of that tierod.

bad are when the balljoint in the end is worn just plain slap *** out and you have all kinds of steering play as a result.

either way, those shops are trying to rob the hell out of you.

tierods are normally $30 parts and inner ones are the only ones that take anything extra to really replace. they are probably charging you a buttload in labor and going to try to charge you like $120 for an alignment lol.
Can both my front inner and outter tie rods be broke if I have been driving all this time?
theres a differnce between worn out,,,bad and broken..you can't drive with broken tie rods...im sure the mechanic ment worn out,,no good,,unsafe..
might be worn out/cant be broken/probably tie rod ends are shot/take it to sears see what they say
Wow, tie rods on the rear! NOT! Unless you have 4 wheel steering, the vehicle doesn't have rear tie rods. You can have inner and outer on the front though, and NO if they were literally broken you would not be able to drive the vehicle. If they were worn, you would feel a very very loose steering. In short, they are trying to rob you. They cost about $25 each, and you'll have to have an alignment done after installation. So your looking at $200 tops.
I have a Dodge Neon and had both my inner and outer tie rods replaced yesterday. I kept on hearing a rattling noise in the front end of my car, especially when I drove over bumps. Total cost for me in parts and labor was $175.00. When I got my car back, I noticed that the steering was much tighter than before.

I have no knowledge about car repair stuff but I have a good garage that I trust when I need work done to my car. I was very satisfied and happy that the repair wasn't very expensive.

I have A 2003 saab 93 I changed a dameged tie rod end how do i turn off the stability control warning light
2003 saab 93 stability control Light on?
you can't... sorry, just another saab story...

I have an 1989 buick century and at 70 mph plus the front end vibrates and shakes really bad. why?

ive checked tie rods, ball joints, changed tires around and no change. i know the struts are worn out and the tires are wearing out on the inside. it doesnt vibrate at any speed but 70 and over. i keep being told its either a wheel assembly or struts. dont have alot of money to throw into it and i keep up with the car when i can. its got over 250,000 miles on it. any help would be greatly thanked
I have an 1989 buick century and at 70 mph plus the front end vibrates and shakes really bad. why?
Could be bad engine mounts and out of balanced tires.
I have an 1989 buick century and at 70 mph plus the front end vibrates and shakes really bad. why?
It's the rubber bushes on the back of the lower track control arms. Do you get a knocking as well?
bad struts alone can do that. if you have bad struts then you can get wheel hop. when you had it jacked up did you shake the tires to see if there was any movement in the wheel bearings ?
bad struts or bushings on control arms

How do you fix a loose steering wheel?

i've had a loose steering wheel for a while. When driving down the road i have to keep moving the steering wheel slightly from side to side to go straight. i was told to change all these parts. I just had the steering box, tie rods, pitman arm, idler arm and ball joints replaced. After everything was done, i got an alignment, but i still have the same problem. what could be the problem???? any help will be very useful.
How do you fix a loose steering wheel?
Smith sounds about right. I would check the air pressure in the tires as well, (do it yourself) that will make allot of difference if they are under pressure and they may not look it. There is also a nut and bolt on the top of older cars (i'm not sure if the new ones still have it) steering box that will take out excess slack in side to side movement in steering. But you need someone who knows what he is doing and someone you trust. Machanics take advantage of people every day, espeailly WOMEN.
How do you fix a loose steering wheel?
huh - maybe where the steering column connects to the steering box is messed up? Maybe just down by the brake pedal?
or it might also be your allignment

    or even your tires

but i think its most likely steering wheel or allignment

get it checked by a professional
You need to adjust the steering box for tightness
It sounds like either you need a sportier car or a smaller steering wheel (an aftermarket one, but that would normally require removing your air bag)

Loose steering wheels are inherent in some cars that are deemed as family sedans. If you drive a luxery family sedan, you're even more out of luck.

If you've replaced all that stuff and the steering still feels loose, I'd say it really doesn't get any better.
im a mechanic for conrads total car care thay sold you alot of **** you didnt need . sue them . all you need is to replace the swivel u joint style knuckle on the stearing shaft . you got jued.
in a lot of older cars the steering is loose. what year/make car do you have? check the power steering fluid and belt. if your father or friend knows about cars get one of them to look at it. but if it's an older car it's just going to have loose steering.

  • WTF? Tie Rods?

I had an oil change and the guy told me that I needed to have one of my tie rods replaced and wasn't at ALL helpful... so, how serious is this? Do I need to have BOTH done at the same time or can I just get the one done first, then the other later? After it's done, do I need to have the wheels aligned as well? Help! I'm just a girl with NO knowledge of cars...
    WTF? Tie Rods?
Usually you can get away with just doing one side and doing the other later but if it was my car i would just do them both because it would be advisable to align it afterward but i have done them by eye b4 with minimal tire wear issues. In terms of seriousness it should be done pretty soon because if it breaks then you won't be able to steer... not fun at 65 mph.
    WTF? Tie Rods?
the tie rods connect the steering to the wheels in a manner.depending on the type of steering you could have four tie rod ends. but many cars have changed over to t rack and pinion type that only uses two. if you have a problem with one, i would replace them both at the same time. you will need to get the alignment checked immediately afterwards.
a tie rod keeps the front wheel aiming where you want it to, if its loose or sloppy, your tire will wear out quickly and the car will not handle as good as it should. Get it replaced, an alignment is usually included when you have this replaced, but ask to make sure when you get it replaced...... And yes, it is something you should have fixed
some things to help you out. look at your front wheels, look closely at each one. does only one look like it's wearing out faster than the other? this is a sign of a loose tie rod. usually the car will vibrate when driving, and the steering wheel will feel loose. In this instance yes replace both tie rods, and you gotta do an alignment.
Take it to an alignment tech. He will do a thorough inspecttion. He will replace the one, and only replace the other if it is getting close to worn, then he will align your car.

The inspections done at oil change time are quick, but they are a helpful indicator of problems that need to be attended to.

Can I drive my Escort without fixing the Sway Bar?

I just got my oil changed today and found out my 97 Ford Escort needs about (according to their estimate) $700 worth of work, including fixing a broken Sway Bar Link, replacing two loose Outer TIE Rod ends, and replacement of rusted cooling lines for my transmission - in addition to the alignment and transmission flush that will need to be done along with all of it.

Unfortunetly - being a college student and all, and at the moment looking for summer employment, I simply don't have $700+ dollars; so I'm trying to prioritize on what needs to be fixed and what can wait. Add to this that I know very little about cars and how they work.

The shop told me the TIE rods were a priority, and from what I've researched I agree. The cooling lines were listed as 'may need future attention' but to avoid future issues I think this is second on the 'fix' list. Does anyone know if a broken Sway Bar can wait a while - or is it more then just an inconvience?

    Thanks!
Can I drive my Escort without fixing the Sway Bar?
If you are not very mechanically inclined , you need to get a couple more opinions from reliable and honest mechanics as to whether you need any of this work . My escort has stainless steel transmission cooling lines and they don't rust . If you have worn tie rod ends you need to replace them promptly before one comes aloose , and you don't have any steering . The sway bar can wait , but your handling may suffer a little .
Can I drive my Escort without fixing the Sway Bar?
I Would Do The Tie Ends And Tranny Lines? How Bad Are The Tranny Lines It's Better To Fix The Lines Then Replace A Tranny If Thay Do Come Lose! As Far As I Know The Sway Bay Is Not A Huge Deal!
The sway bar should just affect your steering. You'll just have to take it easy around the turns....... Fix it when you can. A lot of people take their sway bars off to drop weight, when they drag race.
Did a Ford model T have a sway bar? Make your own conclusions.
i do not know where u r ,but that is way off .they r taken u for the money.. u need to call around for prices, but do not say what u have for prices now. there r cheaper garages out there
The cost does sound a little high. I would shop around. Being in College you can take it to the Mechanic class and have most of the work if not all done for little or no cost but for the parts only. They get to learn how to work on the car you get the work done for free. They will not try to cheat you out of money for repairs not needed.
let me guess. you had your oil changed at either firestone, goodyear, or one of the specialty shops where they change your oil and then come out and tell you that you need all of this work done. if you did, go someplace else like a garage and ask THEM%26gt; best to check again. been there, done that. but DO pay attention to tie rod ends. bad ones can be dangerous.
You need to think safety. The components you have just described are vital to your front end. If you don't have the money then ask for a loan from your family. I know I don't like asking for money either but we are talking about what would be worse. getting the car fixed and paying someone back or having a serious accident and causing maybe someone else harm. This is serious!! my friend. You may loose control of the car. So do the right thing. Can't fix it then don't frive it.
The order you have come up with is the right one. As far as the sway bar link goes, without it the car will lean more in corners/offramps. If you are not an aggresive driver that loves to take corners at high speed then the link can wait for a LONG time with out problems.

86 pontiac, what would cause vibration over 65 & upon de-acceleration therefrom?

I've already changed the u-joints, already had front-end work - 2 new tires, 2 new tie rod ends, new ball joints, new brakes %26amp; rotors, 4 new tires %26amp; both a-frame bushings replaced as well. Vibration has lessened, but its still there between 65 %26amp; 75. Below that its smoothe, above 75 its smoothe as well.
86 pontiac, what would cause vibration over 65 %26amp; upon de-acceleration therefrom?
Did this start after you bought the first two tires? If it did, one of the first tires could be out of round. Otherwise, it sounds like you've done just about everything. Is the car an automatic or a manual.

When you're doing 65 - 70 can you use another gear to stay at this speed. If it stays the same at a higher RPM while at 65-70, then its a problem with suspension, if it goes away then you're probably looking at either an engine, transmission or u-joint problem.

I once had a problem with new u-joints. The ones that I had replaced by a local shop still had a little vibration. I took them apart myself and reinstalled them and everything was fine.

One more idea is the output bearing of the transmission. Another suggestion is to put the car in neutral or park and run the RPM's up to the range of the vibration to see if the vibration could be in the engine.

motor mounts and rims it could be..

Hi, i have a 03 mitsubishi lancer i am getting a popping noise as i stop and accelerating from a stop?

doesnt do it in reverse only when coming to stop as i stop and as i accelerate from a stop, ive changed iner and outer tie rods, stabilier bar bushings. thxs nicholas
Hi, i have a 03 mitsubishi lancer i am getting a popping noise as i stop and accelerating from a stop?
Have your braking system check. If your pads and lining are all okay, i suggest let it clean. It might be too dirty causing the popping noise. Lubrication and greasing might be needed to eliminate noise under your car. Hope this helps.
Hi, i have a 03 mitsubishi lancer i am getting a popping noise as i stop and accelerating from a stop?
Check the slide pins bushing for wear and tear. the slide pin should glide in and out of the bushing smoothly. If not, the rubber bushing should be replaced and greased with calliper grease not with regular grease. Regular grease causes the bushing to swell and restricts the movement of the slider pin, therefore, the sliders can't work properly and you get the popping noise.

Your problem may sound like mine but it might be a different issue.

Complete loss of acceleration, now won't start - Pls Help!?

So my mom went into the hospital and my car broke in the same day. Not a good day, but I'm not saying this because I'm looking for sympathy. I don't want to make anyone sad for me, but ... Despite the fact that I usually do these things when researching anything, I haven't researched this topic prior to this post and I'm worried that something might be quite nonsensical in here. I apologize in advance, but I'm just sooooo tired right now.

    Please Help.

I was driving, getting a burger while my mom was getting a test done, then decided I really needed to get gas. I couldn't tell how low I was because the needle position varies significantly depending on the slope direction and I was driving on a series of hilly road, but I was really low.

So, I pulled into a gas station that I never go to because I'm just never in that area. I got gas, about a half a tank (don't know if that matters) and drive away. Keep in mind my car was driving absolutely perfect up until this point. I get about three blocks away (.5-1 mile maybe - I'm bad with guessing distances) and the accelerator (which my foot is on of course) falls to the floor. I pumped it and it went back to the floor. Luckily I had a parking area to pull into, but by this time I have no 'gas' or power anything - the brakes and steering wheel feel stiff. I turn off the car and it won't turn back on. It's been pushed to the side of the lot with the hope that it won't get towed before I decide what to do with it. It does try to turn on. Makes a noise like it's not getting gas???

So ... any ideas what's going on? Is it something an amatuer could fix without special tools? I mostly changed my tie rod ends on a ford tempo I had once. Had some help from someone stronger than me. I can figure out mechanic things, but strength and tools might be an issue. Or would it be best to find a mechanic and hope I don't get ripped off? But really anything to shed light on this problem will be helpful - personal advice, links, whatever else you know of. I'd usually dig deeper myself, but ... you know.

But at least I have my mom's car to drive in the mean time.

Thanks. (and it's a '93 Chevy Lumina in case you need to know)
Complete loss of acceleration, now won't start - Pls Help!?
could be a clogged pump pick up screen or a clogged fuel filter. could even be the pump. but i would check to see if you have gotten water in your gas that will make em quit every time.

  • How to repay an act of kindness,?

The company I work for was sold the new owner saw my car was in desperate need of repairs, he told me to give him my keys so I did and he drove off with my car. He returned at the end of the day and had done about $1,000 worth of repairs, new tires, front end alignment and new tie rod ends, even an oil change. I asked him how much it would cost me. He said $0.00. I have never experianced such an act of kindness before. What do you get someone who already has anything they want?
How to repay an act of kindness,?
As a hurricane Katrina survivor down here in New Orleans (I lost my downstairs), I had been online ranting about how FEMA said I didn't have enough damage so I was receiving no assistance, but yet someone with no damage received several thousand dollars. I recevied an email from a total stranger asking me what I needed. I said %26quot;prayers and positive thoughts%26quot;.. They asked how my kitchen looked and I responded with the fact that I lost the kitchen and everything in it.

The next day I had an email with a link to sears.com and was told to pick a stove. I did. This total stranger bought me a brand new stove to replace the one I lost.

Here is how I repaid that stranger. I sent an email to them thanking them, and expressed how much it meant to me that someone who I didn't really know cared enough to offer such an expensive gift, and then I 'paid it forward%26quot;.. I didn't have the money due to recovery work to financially pay it forward, but I went out and helped several elderly people gut their homes and helped others clean up their property.

So my advice would be to give that person a thank you card, say thank you again to them personally, and then when you are financially on your feet, pay it forward.

It is good to hear about your experience, because it reinforces the fact that there really are good people in this world.
How to repay an act of kindness,?
Pay it forward - so something kind to someone who needs it, and then thank the person who helped you. PS - that is AWESOME for you - congrats!
You repay him by doing your job to the best of your ability, He'll make that money back by not having to search for a new employee as talented as yourself.. ten pointer, hahah.
How about a heart felt thank you card?
work as hard as you can for the company show him that the kindness was done for a good and worthy person
You can repay him by being the best employee you can be, and doing likewise for someone else if you are able to do so.
buy him a rose bush and write a note to him telling him how much you appreciate what he did and that words cannot express it
Try to help someone who needs help.
Be grateful, %26quot;do on to others, and they will do on to you%26quot;...Return the act by helping others in need, when you can. Maybe these 'good' acts can become contagious! (*also, I'm sure you'll never forget this, and perhaps in the future, fate will provide you with the opportunity to DO something for that person) Thank you for sharing!
I agree. Pay it forward. Buy a very nice %26quot;thank you%26quot; card for your boss, and in the card, explain to him that since he said you don't owe him anything, you're going to %26quot;pay it forward%26quot; and help someone in need.

Or perhaps you can ask him what his favorite charity is, and make a donation to it in his name, and then give him the receipt in a nice thank you card. Say %26quot;for the person who has everything, who insisted on giving. I am %26quot;paying forward%26quot; your kindness by making a donation to *so and so* charity in your name....

You get the idea. That's great about your car. Sounds like you have a wonderful boss.
thank him -show your faithful subordination as a reciprocal.
I usually make a donation of time by volunteering for a charity like habitat for humanity or another way to pay it forward and then let your boss know that he inspired you to help others in a thank you card.
I get the feeling that a simple thankyou will do for this guy. Like others have said already, He is investing in you as an employee. But He's the kind of guy that likes to help others. The act for him alone is what makes him happy. I don't think it's an attempt to buy your loyalty but a genuine act of kindness.
It depends on how much it really cost him, and it depends on how much you make and the value to your company.

If your job has low pay and could be done by any gorilla with two arms and a pulse, then it's a big deal and deserves a thank you letter.

If you are skilled labour or your job requires a lot of training, he's buying loyalty and goodwill from an employee. Some might call it brownnosing, some (me) might call it good business. Replacing and retraining good employees is expensive. And even if this is the case, send him a thank you note anyway.
I recommend setting up a scheme of 'kindness points' - you award points for acts of kindness and when a person has accumulated enough points, they can redeem the points. Of course you would have to monitor it carefully to ensure there was no cheating but I'm sure that could be done.
NO!! to get someone something for their act of kindness is a big mistake, you would be putting a value on it, and therefore dismissing it.

Smile, be happy, and do your best for your new boss.

HE doesn't need anything except your loyalty, perform your own act of kindness for someone who needs it, therefore making the whole world happy ;)

PS. Does your boss fancy you? :P
Your loyalty to the companies success and a really nice card.
    You say %26quot;Thank you%26quot;

You dont have to repay kindness. He/She did not do it to be awarded a gift.
Repay the new owner in kindness maybe take him to

    lunch or something like that.
The best thank you is to continue working for him and do good work. Maybe you can give him a nice thank you note and a box of good chocolate (nicely wrapped).
A book of quotes that express your thanks..........

    Question about fixing car?

when changing left front tie rod do i need 2 put grease also????
    Question about fixing car?
it should (tie rod end) have come with a grease fitting.once assembled install the fitting and ad grease with a grease gun.
    Question about fixing car?
depend for when you took it out you counted how many turn, and fit it back to the same turns, and no you don't need to grease it as the grease should be under sealed boot.

as I am confused with your question are we talking about the threat of the tie rod or the actual joint ?
Whenever you're modifying a moving joint use a lubricant. Not only does it help it move but it also minimises rust.
    yes put grease

Why is the left front tire wearing out faster than the others?

I have a 2001 Neon.I had hit a curve not too long ago to avoid a deer. I knoiw my car needs an alignment but for some reason the left front wheel wears out fast. It makes a funny noise to when i drive likes the tires is rubbing against the edge of the street in a way. I changed the strut on that wheel this weekend. Will I need to probally change the tie rod also or is ut because it needs an alignment? Please help me with this guys. I really need to know why my car isnt takin alignment as well.
Why is the left front tire wearing out faster than the others?
Could be bent tire rod. Not expensive to fix.
Why is the left front tire wearing out faster than the others?
ur front end needs lined up,take it to a tire shop and have the front end aligned.
    too many right turns?

and too many burn outs rotate the tires as needed or more often if wanted
YOU NEED TO TAKE YOUR CAR TO A REPAIR SHOP AND HAVE THEM TAKE A LOOK AT IT TO SEE IF ANYTHING IS BENT, AND IF IT IS, IT WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED BEFORE THEY CAN ALIGN YOUR VEHICLE,

IF YOUR VEHICLE IS EATING TIRES LIKE YOU DESCRIBED, YOU NEED TO HAVE IT LOOKED AT BY A PROFESSIONAL AND REPAIRED BY A PROFESSIONAL, EVEN IF YOU REPLACE ALL THE COMMON PARTS YOUR SELF, YOU COULD HAVE BENT THE LOWER CONTROL ARM OR EVEN CRADLE IF YOU HIT THE CURB HARD ENOUGH

IF YOUR CAR IS OUT OF ALIGNMENT ENOUGH THE NOISE YOU ARE HEARING COULD BE THE TIRES GOING DOWN THE ROAD, BECAUSE THEY ARE FIGHTING EACH OTHER, I AM SAYING ONE TIRE WANTS TO GO ONE WAY AND THE OTHER TIRE IS TRYING TO GO A DIFFERENT DIRECTION CREATING THE NOISE

Please help NIssan Tech or any nissan expert? what happen bearing got damaged in 2mo's?

ok the car is a 2001 maxima, started with a squeak when i turn left i checked and the wheel was wobbly, so we changed the tie rod ends, ball joint and bearing but old hub, but still the squeak remained and 2mo's later this is what happen please check the pics)

    http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b310/e鈥?/a>

    http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b310/e鈥?/a>

but this time i changed the bearing and the hub same side and soon the right. and also instead of using the air tool to tighten them used a torque wrench and hand tighten it. but still the squeak sound is there when i turn left so should i be worried?

the sound is like squeak, squeak, squeak, squeak like a bird

any idea why thanks in advance

by the way the bearing was put in place using a press not hammered
Please help NIssan Tech or any nissan expert? what happen bearing got damaged in 2mo's?
I am glad I don't live in rusty part of the country like you. Not changing a damaged hub will cause to much play and inproper pre load on the bearing. Yes never hammer on a bearing. Chirp chirp squeek may be the backing tin shield may be just touching the back of the rotor or you missed the inside brake pad squeeler is worn into the rotor. I bet your bearing was noisy before you stopped to fix it.

    Tir rod ends help plz?

ok i took my car to a shop after my car got hit and the person took off they said i need inner and outer tie rod ends replace and of course a wheel alignment but the wanted like $900. i went out and bought all the parts and was gonna do it myself im only 17 so i figured it would be hard but i could do it....so i got the outer ones changed it took me like 4 hours then i go to do the inner ones and they dont wanna come off....i have a 1997 chevy lumiina ls how much would it coast to just get the inner ones done?
    Tir rod ends help plz?
i think u need a tool to remove the inners i see my friend do mine and i think he had a tool to do it wit he did both ball joins and inter and outer for 100

    $
    Tir rod ends help plz?
Okay, do you have the right equipment? I just did all my tie rods.

    Two methods usually work.

    1) Heat the stud up with a propane torch for about 3 minutes, then hit that stud as hard as you can with a hammer, dead on.

    2) Buy a Tie Rod Separator Fork. $5 at any standard Lowes, Fleet Farm, Home Depot.... If you can't find it, you can rent one at Autozone / Advance Auto Parts for $30 (you get it returned when you return the tool).
they,ll charge you about 35.00 a piece to do the inner ones, then the alignment, but you saved a little on the two that you already did, good luck.
When you tried removing the inner tie rods, were you using the correct tool? There is a tool specially made to remove inner tie rods from the rack and pinion. If you weren't using that, maybe that's why you weren't able to take 'em off. As far as labor to replace them, prices vary among mechanics. One thing's fo sho, you wanna price around.
There's a problem here: if other front end components were damaged in the crash (such as control arms, balljoints, and whatnot), you might have a hard time removing/installing parts under there.

Your best bet is to price around at several independent shops. Hopefully they don't find that other parts need replacing as well.

  • Honda Civic, steering is erratic, feels like the car is gonna flip, Help?

Just changed the tie rods, I wasn't for sure I could do it but I did... The car drove fine, but the steering wheel was way off center... Well I tried to fixed that by adjusting the tie rods, however the steering is terrible now, and I can't seem to get the car back in alignment... I barely turn and it feels as if I am jerking the steering wheel all over the place. Any help would be appreciated... Thanks
Honda Civic, steering is erratic, feels like the car is gonna flip, Help?
Your best bet is a professional alignment, but I'm guessing you don't really have the money for that. Changing the tie rods always throws the alignment way off and the tires will wear out very quickly if it is not set right.

That is how you do it yourself. It takes patience but it is possible to set the toe (which is controlled by the tie rods) yourself. Put a strip of duct tape from sidewall to sidewall across the front tires and drive a mile or so on fairly straight road, enough to show a wear pattern on the tape. If the outside edges are wearing, adjust the tie rods (equally on both sides) to bring the front of the tires apart. If the wear is on the inside adjust the other way. The side that is exposed to the incoming pavement gets the wear. When the wear is even, adjust the tie rods one side in, the other side out, equally to center the wheel. Check the wear and repeat the two steps if necessary.
Honda Civic, steering is erratic, feels like the car is gonna flip, Help?
Take it for an alignment.. you cant get it right by guessing..
And the risk of being really obvious... why don't you have the car aligned properly by someone who knows what they are doing and has the right equipment? That is ALL you need, a proper alignment. Proper wheel re-alignment is MANDATORY after replacing Tie Rod ends. If you don't do it, and I mean today you could certainly end up killing yourself but I also guarantee you will be buying a new set of tires in the next couple of weeks when you burn them through to the cords.

Take the car in and have it aligned TODAY! You CAN NOT DO IT YOUSELF. The total range of toe adjustment on this car to keep it in factory spec is 0.08 degrees. My guess is you are off 2.0 to 3.0 degrees on EACH SIDE and there is no way you will get it back with the naked eye. The alignment is much cheaper than a new set of tires or the new car you will need when you wrap it around a tree.
To do the alignment right you need to take the car to a repair shop that has an alignment rack.

The car is unsafe ( it can skid or rollover) without properly done alignment.
Like everyone said...you need to get it aligned. But make sure you (or whoever aligns it) also checks out the lower ball joints, as these are also known to go bad...as you can't properly align it if it has other worn front end components (ie.upper/lower ball joints and inner tie rods).
your going to have to take it to a alignment shop to get it straightened out.

How do I remove this steering connecting rod?

The vehicle I'm working on is a 1978 Toyota pickup SR5. I need to drop the steering rod connector so I can drop the oil pan and change the gasket, but I can't remove it with the rod in the way.

I removed the cotter pins and nuts but I can't make the tie rod, etc. budge at all. Here's a pic to show what I'm dealing with:

without lookinf id say you needed a forn.its a fork used to apply pressure between the ball joint and its mount.see the boss is tapered, and the shaft on the ball joing is matched.they wedge together, and you need a wedge to pull em apart.a well placed hammer blow can and will pop em loose.dont try it.just go to harbour freight and get a forn, they are cheap.use it between the 2 joints, and bang it with a bfh(big f;;king hammer)
How do I remove this steering connecting rod?
They have a tool that's about 12%26quot; long, it's about a 1/2 %26quot; round bar with a V shape made on one end of it ,you put the V between the two rods then hit it with a hammer and thay come apart. Any auto parts store will have it, i call it a fork tool.
Have you tried using a separator for removing tie-rods and ball-joints. It's made like a fork. You may need a hammer to hit the separator and it should come loose.
use a ball joint and or a tie rod end separator......usually called a fork.......can even rent them in loan-a-tool programs at most parts stores...

shops use a press-type(which is better) but the fork will work......b carefull so u don't damage the rubber on the parts....good luck

Do I need to change my brakes or is it my tires?

My brakes have squeaked a few times, but not continuously. I just bought the truck a year ago. I thought it was just my brakes, but when I had my oil changed both tires on the passenger side had a lower tread than the driver side. Also when i turn my wheel hard to the right it makes a noise? Could this noise be a tie-rod? Or could it be an alignment problem? My truck bears to the right on a straight road, but not all the time. My tires make a roaring noise at a high rate of speed and are not doing the %26quot;normal%26quot; shaking, that an out of line vehicle would do. I read that it might be a tire problem instead of an alignment problem. I know a mechanic can't really tell unless they take a look at the actual vehicle and drive it, but can you tell me what is most likely wrong with my vehicle or if it is multiple problems? Oh my vehicle is a 2003 Mercury Mountaineer AWD, 6 cylinder. I had this problem with my last truck no problems ever seemed to be solved. I don't want the run around again.
Do I need to change my brakes or is it my tires?
Turning to the right is not going to cause a tire noise. Ford/Mercury outer tie rod ends are notorious for making noise since they use a plastic bushing instead of grease for lubrication. Eventually the bushing wears and starts to squeak - a truly horrible design.

Your tires probably make noise due to uneven %26quot;heel-and-toe%26quot; wear due to lack of rotating tires on schedule and/or a wheel alignment that is off. Ford/Mercury trucks are notoriously hard on tires and demand very careful adherence to the maintenance schedules to get good, even wear out of them.

Given that it is a Mountaineer have it checked for worn out ball joints in the front suspension too.
Do I need to change my brakes or is it my tires?
    get a car.
well was the truck new or used? first off if its used it could be what is called a hub bearing making the noise and causing the vibrations. the screeching could also be power steering but i would have the hub bearings checked. and it could be one tire is underinflated causing the wear it could still be an alignment. because it wont always vibrate.
I am assuming the tyres are not the original fitment. growling tyres are caused by a chunkier tread block pattern. Less tread on passengers side could be because the majority of torque is transmitted through that tyre on the rear axle, i am guessing the tyres have been rotated front to back some time ago( as the tread is directional you would have to turn them on the rim to go left to right.) If the noise on full lock is a clunk it could be a tie rod, squeal could be pump or belt. get it checked
These are all guesses (good ones though).

Get it to a mechanic, preferably a good one.
1; Tires of the same size and tread pattern all the way around (4 that are the same)

2; After tires are changed check tie-rod ends and %26quot;A%26quot;Frame bushings.

Right side suspension front %26amp; Rear, something is loose, weak or broken causing it to lean to the right, IE; tire wear.

3; Squeaking in turns could be belts with extra pressure from the power steering pump, may need all belts replaced and tensions set properly.
sounds like a front wheel bearing, making more noise as you turn.the wearing of the tires could be caused by w wheel alignment.i assume it it rear wheel drive....hope it helps, good luck,

  • Car Trouble????

Ok My car is real shaky at low speeds, like below 45mph it has been doing that for a week or so, I figured I would change the tie rod end, or maybe wheel bearings, do you think that might help that problem...? and now starting today, the car will not turn left, without some pretty good force, even while parked you cant turn the wheel left, turning right works fine, and this is what gets me, while parked, when i step on the gas and turn the wheel it turns, when i am park, or neutral. Can anyone please give me a some sort of solution to this problem? thanks
    Car Trouble????
It sounds like your engine is misfiring which causes it to lose power. Then your power accessories like the power steering don't work right. So to start with, I'd get an ignition tune up if you haven't had one in a long time. Make sure your air filter has been changed in the last 25,000 miles. Check your power steering fluid level.

How to change the driver transaxle on a 1988 Nissan Maxima?

I have removed the axle nut and tie rod. There is not enough room to remove the old alxe. Do I need to compress the spring and completely remove the wheel hub and all?
How to change the driver transaxle on a 1988 Nissan Maxima?
you need to undo the ball joint from the spindle also.what i usually do is take off the ball joint nut and then hit the spindle in the area where its connected to the ball joint with a 5lb hammer.that usually loosens up the connection between the two.then use a long bar between the k-frame and the lower a-frame and push down to seperate the two.now the axle is probably not gonna just pull out easily.but after some tugging on it,it will come out of the tranny.
How to change the driver transaxle on a 1988 Nissan Maxima?
you need to seperate the lower ball joint to get enough room to get it out. i did one just 4 days ago on a prism. i had a little fun because the inner universal was stuck in the transmission it self. after that was out, no problem

    1995 ford mustang 3.8?

hello, I'm having a big issue with my mustang and I cant figure out what's wrong. I keep hearing a rattle when I accelerate and sometimes when I hit a bump on the road coming from the right tire. I've already changed the tie rod inner and outer, replace the struts on both sides, changed my tires , got a wheel alignment, I also had my bearings checked out but its been said the bearings are good. Everything above where needed but the noise is still there. I don't know what the noise could be. can you help me? please...
    1995 ford mustang 3.8?
I think the problem has nothing to do with your wheel, or your suspension. Pop the hood and have a friend press the gas in park, you watch for something rattling, I'm guessing its a lose restraint for something thats shaking, not your suspension.
    1995 ford mustang 3.8?
    It's a Ford, it's a miracle it's lasted this long.

    Just kiddin', good luck.
Does this mustang have rims or hubcaps? If it has hub caps you may have one rattling on you. pull them off and see if the problem goes away. There is also a heat sheild on the catalitic converter that will often work its way lose. I would check that out. another issue is the possibility of rocks in side the fram or cross member rattling around.

Can I replace my own outer tie rods and sway bar link?

I took my 2000 Mercury Cougar to a local lube shop to get an oil change and basic tune-up done on it, and they called me while they were working on it to say that my outer tie rod ends and sway bar links were completely shot, and that if I didn't get them repaired, it could put my passengers and me at serious risk. He quoted me $567 for the parts and labor.

I know most suspension work can be done on your own if you have the time and tools to do it, so I said no, but now I notice that my car doesn't handle nearly as well as it used to. I'm beginning to get real worried to drive my car anymore. I have a friend who has a HUGE amount of tools left from his grandfather who used to be a mechanic. Is this something that I can do myself? I really don't wanna pay $567 for something that I can do myself, and get the parts on my own. Can I find out how to do this from a Chilton manual, or can someone show me a website with pictures or a video, if it can be done on my own?
Can I replace my own outer tie rods and sway bar link?
I can't link you to it anymore, but the autozone.com website has a repair guide for your car. It has all the info a Chilton's manual would have on these procedures.

Go there and register. Select your vehicle info for the profile. Click %26quot;repair info%26quot;, then %26quot;view repair guides%26quot;.

For the tie rods, go to %26quot;steering%26quot; then %26quot;steering linkage%26quot;. You can use a regular pickle fork (of the right size of course) for them instead of the puller they show, since you are replacing them.

For the stabilizer bar links, go to %26quot;suspension%26quot;, then %26quot;front suspension%26quot;, then %26quot;stabilizer bar (sway bar) %26amp; links%26quot;.

You will need to have your toe setting checked on an alignment rack, no matter how carefully you measure them going back on, but it will help to make the trip to the mechanic easier if you count the turns.

The parts from Autozone are $69, and alignment will run you $50 to $100, depending on labor rates and if you shop around. $22 and $24 for the tie rods respectively, and $11.50 each for the stabilizer links.
Can I replace my own outer tie rods and sway bar link?
get the chilton book/swaybar links are easy/the tierod ends have to be right and left and you have to count the turns when removing to get back to right toe settings/get sears to quote/see what they say/you dont need front end align with this but you do need wheel align-(toe-in toe-out)
yes you can replace them on your own but as you mentioned you need the right tools
if you decide to do the job ,just be sure you count the turns when removing the tie rods .down the road you'll need a front end alignment .
    sure not real hard

    type into search box

    how to replace tie rods

how to replace tie rods video

how to replace sway bar links

how to replace sway bar links video

sure really easy a tip count the threads on old tie rod before removing or wrap tape or mark it so that when you go back in your close to way it was might cost you 200
outer tie rods you can change yourself but the inner ones takes a special tool to reach up in the rack and as for the sway bar links you can change them yourself too. on the tie rods all you do is loosen the jam nut, run it back up on the tie rod finger tight, separate the tie rod with a crows foot and turn the tie rod off and run the new 1 back on until you reach the jam nut. tighten the jam nut and install the tie rod on the steering knuckle. i changed a lot of them.

    Best wishes.
Of course you can do the work on your own if you have the proper tools and know-how. Your best bet is to have a friend help and then above all else my friend, work safely and remember to have an alignment done asap after the work is done to complete the job and to keep you, your family and friends safe. For more detail on just what to do, go to your local auto parts store and purchase a repair manual or go to the library and check out the manual you will need. Good luck and definitely get the work done yourself.
You should also get a second opinion to find out if they are actually worn out. Shops telling novice customers this story is unfortunatly very common because most folks aren't able to offer any retort. I would take it to another shop for another free quote first.

What is making my tires squeak?

I have a 1998 Plymouth Neon Expresso. It has been looked after very well since i got it. Other than normal Neon problems, the only other problems that i have had is with the intake which i need to fix (filter i believe it was, causing Service Engine Light to come on) and a water pump bust causing damage to the heads (had heads rebuild). While getting it inspected last year, i had to get the tie rod changed. Not long after that i started hearing a slight squeak coming from what i can only assume to be the tires. At low speeds the squeak is slow and periodic. At higher speeds (30mph and up) it is a squeak that is louder and more constant. My husband thought it was something to do with the steering because he thought it stopped when the steering wheel was turned a certain way but it doesn't do that for me. Does it whether its cold or hot. Can anyone please tell me what could be making the squeaking noise?
What is making my tires squeak?
that could also be a bad wheel bearing causing that too happen to it,they will do the exact same thing yours is doing when they start getting bad,and it could also be the brake pads causing this too happen,or the front end is really bad out of alignment, you,ll notice a lot of wear on the tires if this is the case though.id have it checked, you need to know whats causing it and we cant see the vehicle, good luck.
What is making my tires squeak?
Brakes make a scraping sound, bearings a squeak. If I were you, I'd take it back to the place that worked on your tie rod, tell them what you said here.

They'd probably put it on a hoist and check it out for free. Simply turning the tire while it was on the hoist should be enough.

Is your car lubed when you get an oil changed (some don't need it)? If so, maybe that's all you need.
Try inflating your tires to about 35psi. IF that dont work, maybe its time for a wheel alingment.
    They did do a front end aliment after the tie rod replacement?? As the tire might not be running straight%26gt;
brake pads or cv joint axle ...you know driving with a warning light is not so smart if you dont know what it is then best you stop and have someone check you know it is a warning of thing to come.. you want real answers go to a shop we will just be guessing here squeaking from front end will be brake pads most likely but also could be cv joint of wheel bearing both not wise to keep driving it so start looking for a shop will cost you much less than a tow truck and repairing the damage you do when the wheel falls off

Issues with a Honda Accord EX 2004 I want to buy..are these a big deal?

    Hi

I recently found a very clean second-hand Accord EX 2004, full options, Auto and Leather. I took it to the Honda Dealership for inspection, the mechanic at Honda told me there were the following issues:

    1. AC Condenser had a dent (didn't look big to me) probably caused by a stone/rock, they told me the whole part needed to be changed costing $790 saying they never know when it will cause the AC to fail

    2. Tie Rod Arm has been changed but is ok

    3. Rust on brakes, but brakes work fine

    4. Leakage in the CV Boot

    5. Wipers didnt work, so the selling dealership fixed the motor and regulator for the wipers.

Other than that everything looked ok, some parts in car have minor corrosions because of the snow in NJ

My question is: What do you think of the car, are these problems major ones?

    Thank you
Issues with a Honda Accord EX 2004 I want to buy..are these a big deal?
All of those %26quot;problems%26quot; are normal, it happens and they are definately not any major problems

what I would do is get a carfax.com ( you need the VIN NUMBER ) and check out the history on the car, when/why it was taken to a mechanic/ accidents/ any problems with the car

Another thing is everytime you take your car to a mechanic they are trying to get YouR money, So they look at everything possible and turn it in to a big situation trust me I used to be a mechanic.

I am not sure where they got the estimate of $790 becuase the part is only $100.00-$120.00 and labor would not be alot you can even do it or a friend could. ( when you buy the part it is easy to install and comes with detailed instructions ) BUT AGAIN..that ac condenser is not a problem at all, they just want you to buy something from them.

Sounds like a good car to me but i would advise you to get carfax report

    How much is the car?

These are not major problems, even the AC may work another 3 years w/o any problems, but show it to the owner and ask for the discount!

What to replace in the front suspension of a 93 Protege?

93 Protege, car sways like in an ocean (or an old Caddy Fleetwood) changing lanes on the freeway %26amp; cornering around town. 120K miles - all original parts still. Struts? Tie rods? Stabilizers? Just bushings? Just had new tires put on - alignment seems fine.

Ok heres the fix not real hard not real easy either you need to check your tie rod ends and the sway bar bushings it is most likely the sway bar bushings the sway bar keeps it from rocking side to side it is fairly simple to fix both

Should i be quiet or let her know?

i had a aquaintance stay with me rent free cause her husband left her and wanted a divorce. she had no car no money etc. i found her assistance, found her a car online and for the car i spent money on tires, oil change, tie rods etc. i bought them food and a pay as you go phone and paid her electricity. well the total came to 887.00$ i was cleaning the room i let her stay at in my house and there were boogers on my wall and the bathroom and shower weren't never clean. also the little girl who is 13 yrs old never did dishes or cleaned she told me she doesn't have to do that . that is what her mom is for. her mom told me i had to fix her something and watch her . the agreement was to put a roof over her head and get her on the way and i made her signed a contract be foreshe left. now she calls me wanting to use me to be the baby sitter and cook her kid a meal and i am looking for a job and she won't help me get one after people helped to get her one there at the airport.should i tell her
Should i be quiet or let her know?
    yea id be pissed

i mean you helped her alot and she just used you like she deserved it

kudos for you for being such a good person

but unfortunatly thats how most people are

    most people just take and act like you should be giving them stuff.....i would stand up and say %26quot;hey i did all this for you and you dont even say thankyou or help me%26quot;

just also have in mind that you are a much better person than her and down the road she wil have nothing and no friends and you will one day be happy and have alot of people who love you because you are a good giving friend who dosent damand things back
Should i be quiet or let her know?
    id say listen sista!

    i wont u out!
of course but tell her in a good way
Yes. You need to talk to her about all that junk that she is doing to you. Hold her accountable. That's what friends are for.
OK. Are you really as dumb as you sound or are you a troll? Kick the bitches *** to the curb!!!!
yes. what a ******* *****. she obviously has no respect for you so why should you care about her.
ummm...yah....don't just tell her...tell her off.
Seriously, open your mouth or people will continue to walk all over you--honey stop the craziness now! You sound like one of the good ole girls and let me tell you there IS a time not to be nice. Good Luck!
Yes and tell her good so that she understands and you need to say no and get on with your own life as you do not need her.
    She's gone? Good. Count your blessings that you are only out less than a grand. Write her and the money off and move on. Next time she comes back hat in hand, send her on her way with no more than a %26quot;Sorry, I can't help you this time.%26quot;
she is using u very badly, tell her she needs to shape up or ship out she is working now, she can find her own place
You should ABSOLUTELY tell her EXACTLY what is on your mind. You did a VERY generous thing. I know I don't have almost a grand to spend on someone else! She should be very thankful for your generosity and she most definitely should have at LEAST helped keep the house clean. Sounds like she thought she was living in the lap of luxury and forgot someone else was doing all her dirty work.

I say send her on her way, tell her how you feel and let her finish her journey on her own.
Stop doing any thing for this so called friend and her brat. Give them a date to get out and stick to it. Tell them you can no longer afford to help them or to have them in your home. Tell them they have a week, a month, whatever to get the hell out and then do not mention it again. When the date comes if they are not gone, pack up their stuff and put it out and get your locks changed. Any thing else have it put in storage so they have no excuse to come back. If they come back or try to break in call the cops and have them arrested for trespassing. Tough problems call for tough solutions. This is no time for polite niceties.
Your being token advantage of. Tell her that you are not doing anything else for her, and see how fast her and her daughter change there tunes. She has to realize that you don't have to do anything for her. The 13 year old is disrespectful also. If she gets smart with you after you tell her no, she wasn't a real friend to begin with
    ummm....ya!

tell her you are tired of her abusing your good deeds and you need to look after yourself first and then if her daughter learns some manners and how to do some housework, she can come stay with you again from time to time...til then, she needs to suck it up and be a mom...gah...those types of people are really my pet peeve.
yes u need to tell her but dont let anger get the best of you. just ask her if she realizes and appeaciates how much you did for her and ask her if she thinks shes being fair. maybe she s just used to doing what she wants but kindly let her know that ur not going to let her get the best of u.
Sounds like you got taken advantage of, worst of all by a friend. Don't offer any more help. If you need your money you spent on her, get all your proof together and take her to small claims court. I'm sorry this happened to you. It is people like her that make people regret helping others out of the kindness of their hearts. Tell her. And if she gets an attitude about it take her to court and when you get your money back, disassoiate yourself from her. Who needs friends like that?
Dear, you were used and if it was me, i put a end to it right now, so you lose a friend, believe me dear, friends like that you don't need, there are to many nice people out there. REMEMBER, WHEN YOU SAY %26quot; NO%26quot; MEAN IT and don't go back on your word. good luck my thought and prayers are with you.
People will use for as long as you let them. You are not the kids mother or even kin to them. She ain't doing nothing for you and you did all that for her and she ain't even a friend to you just your acquaintance. I would tell her how I feel. Seems to me she or her kids did not appreciate what you done for them. call her husband and tell him you see why he left her. LOL
You really need to tell her because you didn't have to open your home and heart to her or your child. She needs to be thankful for a friend like you. The way you say she left the house is just plain wrong. Just because her husband is leaving her and hurted her doesn't mean she has to treat you and others with disrespect. Go ahead and tell her how you feel and how she been treating you

Wanting to sell a 1991 Plymouth Voyager LE how much do you think it'll go for?

I have a 1991 Plymouth Voyager LE with 166,000 miles on the boy and unkown on the engine(It's been replaced once). The Transmission has two clutches and the shift recoil going out. Plust the Engine control module is shorting. I have put in a new autinator, new tie rod ends, new ball joints, a new battery, the engine purrs like a kitten but with the two clutches and the recoil it jerks whenever changing into 2nd and Overdrive(it has a 3 speed auto with Overdrive) The engine is a 3.3 Liter V6. With the new parts in how much do you think it would go for if i tried to sell it?
Wanting to sell a 1991 Plymouth Voyager LE how much do you think it'll go for?
Go to www.NADA.com....It will give you the value.
Wanting to sell a 1991 Plymouth Voyager LE how much do you think it'll go for?
you should be able to get 1500 or better out of it. but sell it yourself
i would say maybe 10000 or lower just have the buyer make na offer and if you ant sastifyed with the offer than i would tell him to go on a hike
IF these run perfect they are worth about 800-1000. Yours needs a $1500.00 transmission overhaul. It is worth ZERO. You might be able to find a mechanic to give you a hundred bucks for it if he wants to fix it himself...Looks like you used it all up! All the replacement parts you put on were replacements of worn out parts. They ADD no value to the vehicle. My suggestion if you have the space is to go buy another one yourself for about $1500 bucks that is REALLY nice...and take all the good parts off this one, put them in a box in the garage, and send the rest of it to the junkyard! Good luck!
    not much

selling private would get $500-$700 If its clean

    10 years car sales experience
    scrap it
sell it yourself, but add some saw dust to the transmission, it will silence any noises from the tranny, and you might actually get away with it. if you got 800 for it i think you would be doing good. if the ecu is going out that cars days are numbered. you might just want to think about parting it out. you could probbaly get $1500 for parts and then sell it to a junk yard for $50 bucks. if your state has a lemon law then they can come back and demand the money they paid. its a tough call...
I can see that you like to get your use out of your vehicles! Nobody wants to buy a car with a bad tranny unless they have a car with a bad engine and a good tranny. You might do better to try to find one of these! Just remember, you don't know how many miles are on their tranny, just like no one really knows how much longer your motor has before it hits the skids. Honestly, your car is not worth much of anything. Count your blessings for getting the life that you got out of it! Ask yourself %26quot;Would I buy a 1991 ANYTHING with 166,000 miles on it?%26quot; And then, what would you pay for it, with a bad tranny? Remember your answers because when you see the guy with the Voyager that has the good tranny and bad motor, his is worth just as much as yours. Don't pay one penny more!
not much you are better off trading it in.

Are OEM parts good quality parts for your car?
OEM is not a brand. It stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. The company who made your cars makes them in other words.
Are OEM parts good quality parts for your car?
OEM stands for Orignal Equipment Manufacturers. This just means that the parts are made by the automotive company or by one of the suppliers they used when your vehicle was built.

If you're buying a ball joint or any other non-cosmetic parts you'll be just fine getting them from NAPA, Advanced Auto, etc.
Yes they are good parts for your car. OEM Original Equipment Manufacture. (OEM) that means they were manufacture to specifications from the factory on the blueprints for that type make model car.
Generally, yes, they are good parts. But for me the high cost of the parts is enough to steer me to aftermarket brands, like TRW or Moog, which in most cases are just as good, if not better.

Play in tie rods...is that normal?

Is it normal to have %26quot;play%26quot; in the tie rods of a car?

I was told by one mechanic while they were changing the oil they noticed a few things, the loose tie rods being one of them and suggested we take it to the dealership since it is under warranty, upon taking it to the dealership we were told %26quot;it is normal to have play in the tie rods%26quot; and in the end didn't touch them...I feel like the front end of the car is loose (would that be associated to this as well?)

Please, if you are a mechanic can you help me out?

    Thanks!
Play in tie rods...is that normal?
I wish I could give you a direct yes or no.

First; Was the oil changer a mechanic, or was he a Jiffy Lube oil changer?

Second; What does he call %26quot;play%26quot;? Play along the length of the tie rod is bad, you will usually notice it when your tires start wearing on one edge since it effects alignment.

If you notice that you can twist the shaft, and the tie rod end rotates a little around itself, that is okay, and is probably the normal play that the dealer is referring to.

I would trust the dealer, but if you aren't sure, take it to another shop that you trust, or even another dealer, and get a second opinion.

    Good luck.
Play in tie rods...is that normal?
There is supposed to be some free movement in them to allow normal operation but not excess wear.It may be helpful to get another opinion.
shouldnt see or feel much normal to have every little movement not hard to cherck jack up wheel hold left to right shake if you feel it move its bad
what kind of mechanic is he? the front end has to be tight and no movement what so ever and that,s including the tie rods.
It feels loose since somebody said it was loose? It felt fine before? Sounds like mind over matter.

If the dealership says it is within tolerance, then it is fine. For peace of mind you can get a 3rd opinion from a shop that does front end alignments. If they give you written confirmation it is out of spec, take that back to the dealer, if they say it is within tolerance, then you know for sure.
