Tie rod end recommended to be replaced, am I getting taken?

Yesterday went in for my %26quot;free%26quot; oil change that came with the purchase of my van, an '04 Chrysler Voyager which I bought in August. While there I had them rotate my tires because they were due, which turned into a $55 lug nut replacement because they couldn't get it off because it was on too tight----(which I pointed out that they must have put on too tight when they put on the new tires to sell me the van, and they agreed and replaced that for free) Ended up recommending that one tie rod end needed replacement to the tune of $400+........told them I didn't have the $$ to do that right now. Went to pick up my van and NOWHERE on the paperwork did it say that I needed a new tie rod end. It said they recommended replacing the transmission fluid and some other fluid, that my tires were rotated, oil changed. No other recommendations. I asked where that was in the paperwork and they said %26quot;Oh it isn't a dangerous situation, it has some %26quot;give%26quot;, but will eventually need replaced.

There are degrees. A tie rod may indeed be up for replacement, but be some time away from being unsafe. It may even be good enough to pass a safety inspection, but front end parts do wear, there is no way around it. They have given you a caution, that is all. If if was truly at the unsafe level, they would have marked it all over the paperwork, or even not allowed you to drive away. Some provinces and states have strict laws on this. But, no matter what the next person says, it will need replacing at some time in the future. I had 2 worn tie rod ends, recommended replacement, but just a caution, I waited for 10,000 km before I actually replaced them.

Look. If they say your tie rod is in bad shape, then you need it fixed. Other wise you could be driving down the street and your tires could actually collapse in on you. Depending on how fast you are going at the time this can be quite dangerous. Best bet. Get a second opinion if you have reason to suspect your mechanic is not on the %26quot;up and up%26quot;. Usually there are signs of wear and tear. An experienced mechanic probably won't even charge you to just look at it.
400.00 for a tie rod no way!!! 95.00-100.00 plus alignment cost... Never go to a dealership unless it is warrenty work!! My tie rods are bad and to have both replaced and alignment is 200.00
Yeh you should always get a second opinion, we always seem to have idiots recommending stuff, it get really annoying
Get a new mechanic. this one is a scumbag looking to steal your money.
if you arent having any vibratiosn, steering issues, or weird wear on your tires, ignore them.
I would get a second opinion. Those are expensive to replace, but they're also essential to driving. Go somewhere with free estimates.
the tie rods have been bad on every chrysler van i've ever worked on, so it would be believeable. but $400 is a little steep. i would have it checked by another shop or knowledgeable person.
Sounds suspicious to me! When it comes to your steering it is DANGEROUS! I would have your friend look at it ASAP and next time maybe he will rotate for you. Surely he wouldnt charge u 55$
What you need to do jack up the car on the side they said need replaced. Grab the tire on both sides. If it wiggles and has alot of play you should replace it very soon. If a tie rod breaks you will most likely have an accident.
It doesn't cost $400.00 to replace a tie rod end. It is easy to tell IF it needs replacing by twisting it to see if it has a lot of loose play in it.

?
It is probably marginal but $400 seems a bit steep to me unless they have to replace the whole steering gear assembly, if thats the case then your getting a good deal.

Most inner or outer tie rods usually run no more than $250 parts labor and aligned.
Wear on a part is subjective.

While they were in there it could have been an easy (if not all entirely necessary)...and there is something to be said for preventive maintenance.

But never ever just agree to a repair that is %26quot;not dangerous%26quot; without a second opinion.

It's odd that they didn't place the recommendation on with the others...but it may not be particularly sinister.

If their service has been agreeable thus far, continue to use them, but keep your eyes peeled. They aren't likely to try to take advantage of you if you check every little thing and make them aware that you'll be getting a second opinion before agreeing to any major repairs.

Good Luck
I think you were getting hosed. If you know a reliable mechanic near you (www.cartalk.com will tell you if you don't) take itto him and have him check the tie rods. Beware though because Chrysler Voyagers are not very reliable, so it's possible there may be an issue with tie rods. You can Google it and see what you find. Good luck.
You can tell yourself, just see if it has any play in it, it is pretty easy to tell.
stay the hell away from these people. First they sell you a car.

Then they use one of those dam impact wrenches on your tires. If you get a flat on the road how the hell is the road guy gonna get it off?

And now they want to sell you a tie rod for 400 dollars. Which is absolutely f*****g rediculous.

you may well need ties rods but dont let them do it.
For one thing $400 is alot to ask for one tierod to be replaced. The part in the first place runs about $25.00 to buy. And secondly on front end suspension parts both sides are usually replaced at the same time. I would go to a nationally known company that deals with tires and front end alignment. You can go online if you have a library card and that library has a online database called ARRC( automotive repair and labor estimate). good luck
Bet the lug nut was on the driver's side, wasn't it?

Chrysler tightens Left on Driver's side.

A 2004 shouldn't need tie-rod ends with normal mileage...

If this is a Chrysler - product dealership, I would ask them to check for service bulletins, then. If they think it needs tie-rods, then it should have a %26quot;hidden warranty%26quot; or service bulletin advisory for premature failure....
ohhhh noo! there is no tierod for 400+ thats is bull. the tirod cost aorung 15 to 35 at most, specially an america car like yours. get it done and checked somewhere else.
find yourself a good ASE reputable shop whom you can trust and stay away from the dealership's.
Unless you are mechanically inclined and adept of the specific construction of this joint-you can be deceived. Unfortunately most of us are deceived-'cause lack of intimate understanding. This area of knowledge is little understood and many mechanics take advantage of you here. Many dealerships pressure mechanics to 'produce' with the threat of termination if they don't. That leads to aggresivelly stated falsehoods to conjure up illigitimate sales to satisfy a quo. Run-do not walk-away from such con-artists and thier pimps. Yes -the worst offenders are in dealerships.
It's a Chrysler minivan. The Outer Tie Rod ends go bad on those as you drive them off the lot when new. The tie rods for this vehicle are the only ones I keep in stock at my shop because we replace one almost daily.

Chances are excellent that it is loose.
