What are the inner & outer tie rods?

Hi,

I don't understand the difference between inner tie rod and outer tie rod. Please help. How many tie rods are there?

The situation is like this:

6 months ago I had one of the tie rods replaced. On the invoice says:

TIE RODS ENDS (Right-Outer) (bold font on the invoice)

ES2912RL Tie Rod End

R%26amp;R Outer Tie Rod End

So this is what was changed.

Today I went to the same shop and below is what they've found wrong:

Right Tie Rods LOOSE

RF Tie Rod Newer

Left Jam Nut Loose

Does anyone understand what the problem is? Are they saying now that what was changed in December is now LOOSE ???

I appreciate your help!

Thanks !
What are the inner %26amp; outer tie rods?
Basically what you have said is that they found a new right outter tie rod and rec.'d to you that the left jam nut has been left loose. You were probably charged for an alignment with the last repair and they are the ones that left the jam nut loose.

It is not easy to describe the system.

This is going to be generic so bear with me. Imagine the steeringwheel connected to a 3 foot pole. At the bottom is a gear with the teeth pointing at you left and right foot not the ground and your face. this gear is splined to a pole that runs from wheel to wheel. they are connected at the back of the tires. when you turn right it pulls at the back of the right tire and pushes at the back of the left tire. so now this pole running from tire to tire is broken into 5 pieces. the center. then the inner tie rods, which screw on to the center piece. One on each side (left and right). They have a ball and socket type joint(like your shoulder). At the other end of the inner tie rods they have 3 inches of thread. Next is the outter tie rod ends. There are 2 a left and a right. They screw onto the inner tie rods and connect the whole mess to the wheel. Usually the outter tie rods have a female end. They also have a ball and socket joint. They look like the letter %26quot;L%26quot; The long part of the l having the female threads and the short part having the ball and socket attaching it to the wheel. There is also a jam nut on the inner tie rods threads that allows the nut to screw up to the outter tie rods to lock it in place. It is actually the inner tie rod that when turned screws in and out of the outter tie rod adjusting the position of your tire and/or your alignment.

So if they replaced an outter tie rod they had to align it.

I know that was very generic but I hoped it helped
What are the inner %26amp; outer tie rods?
Its the ends
On most new cars there a set of 4 ie-rods. Inner and outer. They are used in conjuction with steering box, which is more than likely a rack-an-pinion unit. When these go out, it will feel like your tires are going to fall off.
you might want to take the car to a different shop. There are two the inner is inside closer to the steering box (inner usually don't go as fast or at all) outer controls your wheels without tie rods you wheel can go in any direction. for these things to become loose you need to do a lot of driving and hitting a lot of pot holes or your mechanic did not do a good job the first time. be careful who u take ur car to. good luck..
Sounds to me like they didn't tighten it properly when they installed it.

The outer tie rod ends are at the outer end of the tie rods. Near the tire. The inners are at the inner end of the tie rods. Attached to the the center link.

The tie rods, and center link transfer the input you put down to the left wheel across the car to the right wheel.
think of the inner tie rod as a sleeve that on each side has a outer tie rod atached (left and right)

it sounds like you should have paid for the second visit
The shop didn't properly tighten the jam nuts when they replaced the tie rod. Take the invioces to the shop and tell them you want a refund for the 2nd visit.
