Is it bad to drive on a loose inner tie rod? I drive a 2002 Nissan Altima..?

I got an oil change recently and the mechanic told me it would cost about $400 including labor to tighten the inner tie rod on the driver side that is loose. My dad does handy work and will have it fixed he said and that it also isn't very serious. Is it safe to drive a few months on this loose inner tie rod? What effects on the car itself will a loose tie rod have?

is it bad to drive on a loose tie rod end? YES!!!! does it cost $400??? only if the tie rod is made of gold.

tie rod = $50 or less, anything else is a rip off.

alignment = $50 average ( unless its a four wheel aligned car )

replacing labor = 1hr @ $80/hr ( U.S. average )

what effects does a bad one cause? poor steering, les than acceptable handling, tire wear, and ultimately if it fails while driving... a crash!

If you lose a tie-rod, you will not be able to steer. If you're going 65 mph, it can be very bad.

$400 plus labor seems really high. I'd shop around, but get it fixed.
loose??? its either worn out or its not and since the parts for that car only run around 50-75 bucks that quote is high.....to get it swapped probable run u 100-150 labor so like 200...then u probably will need an alignment another 50 bucks .. so around 250 total not 400......
It is only bad if you like to be able to controll where you are going.

A loose tierod causes sloppy steering, increases tire wear, and makes the tierod itself wear even faster.
400 is rediculous to %26quot;tighten%26quot; an inner tie rod. 400 is also rediculous to replace one. i smell a scam..... big time. have it checked out by a proffesional, you should call them and ask them to check it out for free and if they concur that the tie rod is bad then give them the biz for a reasonable price. i dont know the area you live in, but where im from a tie rod job runs about 100 dollars or less, and you will need an alignment afterwards which can go for about 60 bucks. good luck, but dont listen to that first tech, he is a liar.
400 dollars to repair a tie rod is outrageous. Don't go back to that shop.

I am outraged at the government bailout of auto companies. They totally rip people off at every opportunity. GM and Chrysler deserve to go out of business.
