Wierd noises in car......?

i recently took my car in to have the inner tie rods changed and they told me that my steering rack needed replaced. that it had a pinhole in it and a very slight leak.

for a while i noticed a humming when i started the car and after the gas pedal was pressed it went away. the noise was only for a fraction of a second. lately it has gotten worse. it hums for couple of seconds at a time and when i turn wheel to right it hums loudly.

i checked my power steering fluid and it was extremely low. i haven't checked it in so long before that. i added the fluid and the humming has stopped and my car drives amazingly better (go figure!!)

i now have a ticking noise coming from the engine bay....... my questions is: could i have possibly messed up my power steering pump or something (powers steering pump pulley bearings??) from not having fluid in it for a long period of time?? could that be what the ticking is?? it doesn't sound like any engine tick i have ever heard.

First find out where the fluid is going, leaking hose,is the pump leaking,is it leaking from the rack and go frm there

rack and pinion? has a rubber boots on it that fills with transmission fluid and you got a leak, the lower the fluild the grater the noise or hum while turning for it only works when turning.

the ticking noise might be low oil or a chattery lifter .
ive never in my life heard a power steering pump tick so thats elimenated maybe its a lifter with a little built up gunk also can be bad gas try to fuel up some where else if this dont help go through and change your plugs make sure they are gapped to specs.also may be time for an oil change.also is this noise constant or only when u start it? how many miles as long as its not a loud knocking noise your fine.also diffrent oil wait helps in the cold winter what year car and model, size engine.
